Depends if the go the extra mile and offer to clean my windscreen / Tyres, R5 to R10, but otherwise no.
Once read about a guy that said the day an attendant offers to check the tyre pressure of his spare he would give that guy R100.
 
Yes I do and I probably over tip. I don’t tip less than R50.00 unless the service was very bad and I usually tip R100.00.
i refuse to tip/pay the so called car guards though.
 
No. A pet peeve of mine this. Why check the water? Most modern cars you shouldn't top up the engine water with normal water but with antifreeze mix. But for a tip a petrol attendant will happily fill your reservoir with tap water. Plus, if you are servicing your car properly you will hardly need to top up. If you low on water every time you put in fuel visit a mechanic to find a leak. Let him fill your window washer though ... with tap water stood in a watering can that has had algae develop in it from standing on the driveway in the sun and is never cleaned. As long as you tip.

The same sort of thing goes for the oil. Normal service = no extra oil. If oil levels are low between services there is bigger kak happening. It does make sense to "feel" your oil and no petrol attendant does that. Oil must by well ... "oily". Not sticky or black or gritty. Those are all signs of a problem. If you are servicing your car properly ... SO when should you check water and oil? Well if you have an older car (One you are not servicing properly and has done over 200 000km), in which case it is unlikely you have the money to tip.

Pumping tyres? At my local service station where I know the guys well no worries but recently stopped at another service station in town and someone with number problems pumped all 4 tyres different pressures. Plus would you be happy with the tyre pumping if you saw the pump head, you know the one with the valve assembly on the end of a long pipe, just gets donnered on the ground all the time. That thing can't be calibrated properly. Rather find a place with the automatic type on the wall that you can set. Pretty much can't mess that up.

So no. Why tip someone for doing what you shouldn't be doing anyway and then if they do it is just busywork?
 
Usually, R5-R10. Been tipping less though as I've been carrying change less. I once asked the guy to add tip on the card machine and he laughed at me ‍

That would be service! Never happened to me in 30 years.
 
I usually do not tip them, unless they check the tyres, oil and fill up water-then I will tip them most of the times.

Usually anything up-to R10.

id much rather prefer to do it all myself, as you don't need to be a genius to put petrol in your car.

Thats what they do to make ends meet, if they are not petrol attendants what will they do to survive.

Generally, if they offer to wash windows and check tyres etc.

I remove the prop, feel the tyre, check for obvious troubles etc and then check the pressure with my own eyes - I also check/confirm said pressure with my own compressor when I get home. Some service stations have some dodgy gauges/equipment that are seemingly out with as much as 0.5-1.0 bar and I have learned to avoid them.

No.., they already get paid to perform their duties. Just as well you tip the cashier at PnP for ringing up your groceries
 
NO !!!!! What for ? they have a job and earn a salary. I have a job and I earn a salary but nobody gives me a tip !!!!
Besides, if it were my choice, I would prefer to do my own gassing up - but we are forced to accept an attendant to do it for us. I never allow them to clean my windshield - I have had them scratch my windscreen, break my wipers, and scratch my bonnet when they did it in the past

Agree mostly.

I have yet to see a blown head gasket on a car that has run out of petrol. Check your levels before leaving. Also always walk around your vehicle before driving off.

I always carry my own 5L water for drinking, topping up washer or radiator (you can use regular clean water in a pinch) or to help a stranded motorist. I also have a tubeless tyre puncture kit, a 12v compressor and a can of tyre fix. For long trips i carry an extra 5L water and a 5L oil. For the windscreen i put 1L of meths in every 3rd time I top up the washer.
 
Yes, If I have spare change in the car or on me but it's becoming increasingly rare that I have cash so if they are friendly and give me the whole service, I buy them a coke from the convenience store.

They will appreciate that 2L coke or whatever, but I think they will prefer money.
even though it can be small, but it adds up by the end of the day. It can be even R50 for tips.
