Do you tip petrol attendants?

Yes - usually R20. Not afraid to ask the attendant to split a larger note to give them R20.

I started doing this after visiting overseas and realising how cheap labour is here. I'm not going to miss the R20 and I only fill up at most twice a month, so an extra R40 a month is reasonable for someone to get a R20 tip for washing my windows.

They have other ways of using the machine to get "tips". A guy pays R200 cash and doesn't ask for a receipt. The attendant pockets the money. His mate comes with the company car and petrol card. He puts in R200, but the attendant charges R400 on the card. He gives his mate R100 and he pockets R100.

I haven't experienced that personally. I refuse to carry cash and so will only tip if they can accommodate it on a card.

Yes, when they do something more than put petrol in my car. Tyres and cleaing my windscreens... i don't trust them under the bonnet. Usually between R5 and R10 unless they go out their way for something.

Depends on the service I get and their attitude.

If the attendant checks the Tyre pressure, water, oil, clean the windows, etc, a tip is a guarantee, though I never check my water and oil. A vehicle has to stand (level service) with the engine off for at least 5 to 10 min before checking the oil as the oil level will appear to be low, increasing the chance of over filling. At least wait until after you filled your fuel to give the oil a chance to settle in the oil pan/Sump, before checking.

Their wages are included in the fuel price and set through MIBCO IIRC.

It is built into the formula. There have been a couple of fuel increases in the last couple of years that have purely been due to the change in wage rates.
