Had a few instances of people trying to fill petrol into a diesel car, wrong tyre pressures, not being able to read my coolant bottle thinking it's empty when it's not. It doesn't happen often to me, but it does happen. Maybe 10% of the time, if that.

It happens enough that I always make sure I'm out of my car watching to prevent damage to the vehicle. It's a schlep. I'd rather just do it all myself.

I started out earning not even a quarter of that some years ago, same thing even then. This whole tipping thing is extortion, make it part of the product price and get it over with. Everywhere you go people try to extort money out of you.

But comrade! You might put the wrong fuel in your own car! You cannot be trusted with such responsibility. You need a petroleum refueling specialist to do that critical work for you.
 
Haven't driven in a while now but I used to give them a R2 or R5 coin usually if they helped with the tyre pressure or cleaned windows (i.e an extra service) I never tipped them for merely putting fuel into the car.
 
Just filling up? Not a chance. Everyone filling up their car already pays their wages by government decree.

If they do something else that isn't state mandated, like doing the tyre pressure, oil, or cleaning the windshield if it is really dirty etc, then it is R20.

The idea of tipping someone who gives you expected service levels only encourages company's to under pay their workers as they can hide behind the tips as an incentive.

Has anyone ever tipped a cashier at checker? What's the difference between them and a petrol attendant?

I only ever tipped people where I've felt they went outside of the job requirements to help me. A handful of times but I'm strictly not tipping for expected service levels.
 
If they clean both front/back windows without me asking then yes.

I actually tip because they took the effort to take the job in the 1st place instead of being a beggar.

It's expected of him to wash your windows, check the oil and tyre pressure?
 
When someone tips me extra for just doing my job, ill start doing the same and tipping people for merely doing their jobs as well
 
Other: Yes I do tip but not as often as I should
