It's really tough to tip people when you don't carry cash but if I have some spare change I would gladly do so if I felt they deserved it. Like if they clean my windows or if I ask them to check my tyre pressure.

Also known as bribery? Sounds like you tip them to get priory.

Tipping a DHA official has been working just fine for me. I always get my documents from the same department and when they see me, I get priory who they going to help first. Well worth the R500 to R700 every now and again.

Well tipping is just legalized bribery.

I do wish though that the petrol attendants at Engen petrol stations all carry the little tag/QR code scanner thingy so that I can tip them from the Engen 1app. Hardly any of them have access to it

I don't know about you but my general experience is that till workers are way more interested in chatting amongst themselves and serving the customer is just something they have to do in between, you are very lucky if they even have time to greet you.

Depends on the store. They're usually very efficient at WW. Usually also at the pharmacies too.

So they are not really people who go out of their way in offering you the best service, I generally don't know who is more poor when I tip, so it has never been about the poor person, I won't tip an car guard who is not friendly no matter how poor they are.

They actually do that at WW. They check the items and notify you that the item packaging may be broken. For example they check the eggs. They will go and fetch a new item for you in that case.

And lastly, I think you understand the dilemma of tipping for a person who works with money the way the till workers do, what happens when they are short and were seen pocketing some tip money, looks like a sure way of attracting trouble,

It's work creation. The only things they do are, check and fill water, check and fill oil, check and top up tire pressure and dispense the petrol. There is no reason to tip them. While it's harmless it breeds entitlement.

Do you also tip the shelf packers for making the shelves neat for you and making sure the food is not expired? What about the cleaners who make the store nice and clean for you? When you try on clothes, do you tip the people who have to put the clothing items back or fold them and return them to the shelf?

Only if they wash and wipe my windscreen, mirrors, check tires, there is no petrol marks on my car, and they didn't overfill so it drips. Definitely getting a tip then. I check my own oil and water. Too much of a risk to expect someone else to put back the caps and make sure everything is where it belongs.

Would be nice if we could put in our own fuel though.

The tip is already catered for in every litre of petrol i’m paying. Thats why they always ask if they can clean the windows or check the tyre pressure.

Not normally, I do not get a tip when i do my job. i will give them a tip if they go out of their way to clean my windows etc.
