Because sometimes I'm not lus to check my own tyres and clean my windscreen etc. They might be paid to do it but it still just feels off asking someone to do something like that without a small tip / buying the dude a drink if I'm going in. I don't ever ask a cashier to do extra stuff that I'm too lazy to do.

I've never had them check my oil and tyre pressure. I always say no thanks to that.

As for window washing, they just do that anyway without asking, and 9/10 times they lean over the car and their keys (or that funny thing they use to unlock the pump) would bash or scrape against my car. They even clean when clearly my windows are clean.

Also, while I'm commenting about it. What's with the filling the car up till it's over safety detection zone? Most of the time it just leaves a mess.
 
A petrol attendants salary is between R6,000 - R9,000pm (and up to R17,000 as per the latest info) and you want me to tip them for doing their job?

Do you tip till workers at Checkers who earn half that? I haven't seen one person tip a till worker ever... or a bus driver...

Surely you should help the poorest person in the room

Today was a bit irritating today.

Parked at a petrol station to use their shop (not next to a pump). Came out and all my windscreen wipers were up and the guy had washed my windows. He only put the front wipers down again when he saw he was not get a tip.

But left the rear one up :cautious:

The idea of tipping someone who gives you expected service levels only encourages company's to under pay their workers as they can hide behind the tips as an incentive.

I only ever tipped people where I've felt they went outside of the job requirements to help me. A handful of times but I'm strictly not tipping for expected service levels.

One shouldn't tip the petrol attendants. We pay more for petrol to accommodate their salaries already. Self service is easy and even in Europe some stations have staff who pour your petrol, depends if the owner wants his pumps valued more or not :). Also prices in all SA petrol stations are the same. In Europe, each station has a different price and they offer loyalty points too, so you can save a bit by buying cheaper petrol. In SA it's pretty much the "additional services" which differentiate the petrol stations. If the guy gets to check oil, he also get so sell oil. If he gets to check water, he can also get increased likelihood of checking oil. Tire pressure I check myself. I don't ask them to wash my windscreen. There is no alcohol in the petrol stations, so one can't even buy that.

So all in all, no tipping. We don't tip people in Checkers or PnP. We don't tip people on Takealot.

Tipping a petrol attendant has been working just fine for me. I always fill up at the same station and when they see me, I get priory who they going to help first. Well worth the R5 to R7 every now and again.

You can do what you want with your own money. The issue is that self service is forbidden and prices are regulated so the petrol price includes the service fee. In the early 90s PnP tried to do self service and cheaper petrol and was shut down by the Nats very quickly.
 
I try to unless I don't have anything on me. I don't ask them to wash the windshield if I have nothing to tip.

Exactly. If I tip a waiter/waitress and return I will most likely get good service. So as you said , it's my money and I can do what I want with it.

I didn't forbid you though. I just said one shouldn't and gave my reasons why not. You can give the lady in Checkers a tip too. Dude I don't blame you if you tip, although it creates a culture of entitlement. :)

If the lady at Checkers cleans my glasses and checks my trolley's tyre pressure, I will tip her. :p

Also known as bribery? Sounds like you tip them to get priory.

Tipping a DHA official has been working just fine for me. I always get my documents from the same department and when they see me, I get priory who they going to help first. Well worth the R500 to R700 every now and again.
 
Do your clients "Tip" you?

If I have something and they are friendly and helpful, I don’t have issues giving them something. But these days, the times I have cash in my pocket ard few and far between.
 
Almost always, especially if they end up doing 'extra things' such as cleaning my usually dirty windscreen , check tires etc. I always tip them

I don't know about you but my general experience is that till workers are way more interested in chatting amongst themselves and serving the customer is just something they have to do in between, you are very lucky if they even have time to greet you.

So they are not really people who go out of their way in offering you the best service, I generally don't know who is more poor when I tip, so it has never been about the poor person, I won't tip an car guard who is not friendly no matter how poor they are.

And lastly, I think you understand the dilemma of tipping for a person who works with money the way the till workers do, what happens when they are short and were seen pocketing some tip money, looks like a sure way of attracting trouble, so even in those rare occasion when I feel like tipping I would not, because it could easily be construed as them stealing from their employer.
