Tip them? Wasn't there a hike in the price of fuel which included a fee/litre which, as an addon to the salaries of these workers?

So you also have a tag to make the fuel flow and you know how to work the pad they use to tell the pump when to stop the fuel from flowing? Or do they do that for you and you tell them to go away so you can fill up yourself so that you don’t feel obliged to tip them? Or are you in America ?

Or Free State, must be one of those non franchised filling stations with no standards. Fuel dispensing is treated as a serious safety issue in SA, tagging for a customer to fill up their tank is like giving your password to be used by somebody else, could have serious consequences for the employee.
 
They get to smell the sweet smell of petrol all day. I'm my mind that's worth more than any tips I could give them
 
I used to tip but I stopped now because giving random coins lying in the car is worthless rather use it to pay for parking

Self service stations are the norm in Europe which has higher safety standards than South Africa. LOL.

That's all part of their job. In SA the fuel price is regulated. In other countries stations have different prices and it makes sense to shop around a bit. That 'extra service' differentiates one station from the others. Of course checking oil means they often end up selling you oil at a higher price then when purchased in larger quantities in the larger store.
 
I think its sad to try and justify not tipping a low-paid worker. At least they are working and not just lazing around and resorting to crime.

Which, let's face it, becomes less low-risk every year with the ANC doing its level best to make us the poster-child for a failed African country.

By the way - if you don't have cash, just ask them to add R10 or R20 to the bill.
