Depends if the service was good or not.
So what's the difference between tipping a petrol pump attendant and a waiter? Seeing as they are both paid to do a job where social convention is generally that this role can be tipped.

Completely irrelevant. This is Africa. Not Europe.

So these petrol attendants are highly skilled professionals?

What is harder to do, learn to drive a car or to fill up a petrol tank?

I think its sad to try and justify not tipping a low-paid worker. At least they are working and not just lazing around and resorting to crime.

They're already being paid and their job is redundant.

Which, let's face it, becomes less low-risk every year with the ANC doing its level best to make us the poster-child for a failed African country.

By the way - if you don't have cash, just ask them to add R10 or R20 to the bill.

Don't tip them. They have a job. If you have money to give away give it away to the bergies at the robot or give to some charity.

I ask you the same question as to Priapussy - you don't tip waiters then?

What is harder to master, driving a car when having a drivers' license or fueling up?

How about using a gas stove? When 90% of water heating and food cooking is via gas?
Troll alert....

I know right, when you go to a restaurant you just sit there and someone dishes up for you and bring the food to your table, that strange phenomenon even happens in Europe, they pump their own gas bus are incapable of dishing up for themselves at a restaurant, they expect someone else to do it for them.

In many countries there is no tipping. In most of Europe and Asia you don't tip.
I'd rather not tip the waiter. But there is a tipping culture for waiter tipping.

By the way the best restaurant in South Africa, Fyn, includes the service charge in the fee.

Looks like there is also a tipping culture for petrol attendants.
