You pay for the experience. I'm not sure I follow. The petrol attendant gets paid to do something totally unnecessary. The waiter is needed because people off the street are not allowed to go into the kitchen because of safety regulations. There should be NO TIPPING for waiters either. It should be a salaried position. You don't tip the cook, do you?

I'm rational. Do you tip the shelf packers at Checkers? Or the people who fold the clothes after you tried them on and returned them? Do you tip the cleaners who make sure the mall is clean?

You recognize the experience of putting food on the plate yet you refuse to recognise the experience of dispensing fuel?

Sounds like a very rational argument you are making here.

There is no "service charge" prompt on the receipt. There is no TIP option on the credit card machine. Sorry. Yes if such does develop it will be another stupid milestone for SA, after car guard tech.

Stop with the squirmy slip-sliding. As has been said before, it is a social convention that waiters and pump attendants are tipped here in SA.

And shelf-packers at Checkers likely belong to a Retirement Fund etc

The food gets put on the plate by the chef. The waiter merely brings it. Get your thoughts sorted.

There is absolutely no social convention in SA that petrol pump attendants get tipped for pouring petrol. If there was, there would be a prompt about service charge or gratuity on the bill and the CC machine would have that option too.

The experience of buying petrol is the same experience as buying at Checkers. Do you tip the cashier packing your bags? In Europe people pack their own bags.

Really ? I didn't know they had similar system to restaurants. Does it go to that guy or gets split between all ? Some restaurant waiters have told me to pay them cash as tip as sometimes each restaurant has a different policy.

An excellent example of a hidden tax, for zero value-add. Unfortunately EVERYBODY tips them. It's built into the price.
 
Cum to think of it, some of them I would not mind to give the tip.

So, something changed at checkers, at least at mall of africa. I happened to have loose change and gave it to the helper staff but she said they are not allowed to accept tips anymore.

If you tip the petrol pump attendant, you should also tip the lady who packs your bags at Checkers. Don't give me nonsense about it could be seen as theft. People also pay cash for petrol at petrol stations.

I've never seen anyone tip a grocery packer at any supermarket.
