HUNDREDS of South African doctors who have studied medicine abroad fear that their degrees could be rendered worthless because of “unfair” regulations by the Health Professions Council of SA.

The regulations state that returning doctors must complete an internship in the country in which they studied, before they sit for their HPCSA board exams.

However, medical students who study in Cuba on state bursaries are not affected and are allowed to undergo their internships in South Africa.

The doctors said the regulations kicked in this month despite being in existence since 2009. They had never been enforced, they claimed.

The doctors said it wasn’t possible to complete internships in the country of study in some countries, as they didn’t allow foreign graduates to intern because of work permit issues.

Different strokes for different folks.
1 law needs to apply and not only apply to the selected.

Sorry but no "Dr" that "studied" in Cuba and or China, will ever be my Dr.

Hilarious post.
Ever been to a casualty section of a hospital?

What would you do if you find out your Dr. interned under someone who studied in China/Cuba?

I have a medical aid thanks! Never had to deal with "Dr's" who "studied" in China/Cuba!

Lets make it harder to get Doctors here.
In the meantime KZN sits with no oncologists in the Public Health Sector.
Well done ANC

Riiiight... because they'll never go into private practice

I'm sure they do, but with all my appointments and or hospitals visits, I knew beforehand who was my Dr by name.

I know where they studied and even where they did their Zuma year.

I knew the Dr who operated on me and I knew the Dr, on first name basis, who delivered my child!

I heard too many stories about our "drs" studying in Cuba!

I don't just make an appointment at a random dr, that would be really silly!

Creepy! Probably know which gym they attend too.
