That's what I'm taking issue with, these folks have gone abroad and studied and come back to their country but can't get internships here ......

There is a thriving medical tourism business in Cuba. Yes, people from ****holes like the US and Canada go there for reasonably priced treatments.

Apart from that Cuba exports a lot of doctors worldwide. Probably because the cost of training a doctor in Cuba is far cheaper than elsewhere.

The ignorance on this thread is spectacular

Its entirely possible to be a good doctor who did happen to study in Cuba/China and then came to work here.
SA is known to fix these guys up, doctors from all over the world get trained here and come out better for it.

Fresh off the boat is a different story though. Mind you - you get senior specialists in European countries with less experience than junior doctors in SA.

In China the med students don’t even touch a patient.
They are rich spoilt kids who did poorly in school and couldn’t get place in SA.

Lower IQ + Lower quality medical education = BAD Doctor!!

Look what happened when the ANC went for a discount president. Some things, like presidents & doctors, you choose carefully..
 
There is more to this then meets the eye ...

Most of these students (Indians mainly) that go study abroad are forced to , due to the local medical schools implementing a quota system.When they come back the government wants to further restrict them from employment , so that the "locals" can get jobs.Its a vicious circle.

I'm a bit surprised they're not welcoming potential interns from overseas. I recall not too long ago they wanted to force South African graduates to do their internships in unpopular hospitals. Here's a perfect opportunity to supply those hospitals. Similar to what the UK does with teachers, make them start out in the worst schools that no-one wants to work at.

And yet expensive doctors in the US are no strangers to major errors, so apparently price doesn't really indicate quality. People don't go to India and Cuba for surgery simply because they're cheap, but because they had a well-deserved reputation for producing top-notch doctors and medical facilities that charged more reasonable fees than the avaricious medical class in the US. Of course reputations are not permanent.

Because the country they studying in has changed the rules most likely.. At the rate international students get charged its not a light matter, you make darn well sure you can do all you can in the country you studied. And you wont get bursaries either if you are going to get kicked out after your studies are completed

From what I've heard they are very good in handling certain cancers (I think lung cancer) and I've heard high praise from some of the local doctors.. As long as the doctor is good I dont care where they are from

Globally, they're very good in preventive treatments. Less so in curative.
 
Just saw this. It means that SA definitely needs to import doctors.
