COSATU's hellbent opposition to the youth wage subsidy is what caused the ANC to abandon it. It's worrying that you think COSATU wouldn't be involved in discussions around a job seekers grant.

I don't know why you think I don't know the difference? I'm sure the SACP would also support this, but my thinking is that the ANC is more focused on appeasing COSATU, because of their stringent opposition to the other proposal, e.g. the youth wage subsidy.

COSATU represents their workers, which could also be affected by this grant, which is exactly why they do care. Why do you think they oppose the youth wage subsidy? The grant was part of their discussions at their congress earlier this year. Whether it will impact on them or not remains to be seen. You're naive if you think they won't have something to say about this.

Again, it's worrying that you think COSATU doesn't want a say in this. Were they quiet about the youth wage subsidy, considering it's also about the unemployed? They weighed in because they felt it would negatively impact their members. This grant is an alternative proposal to address the same problem, so how can you say COSATU is irrelevant in this whole thing?

What is COSATU? COSATU is a trade union. Its job as a trade union is to represent people that are currently employed and members of said union. COSATU couldn't give a **** about the unemployed. COSATU had a problem with the youth grant because it would have led to job losses for the currently employed.

Would COSATU support a unemployment stipend to begin with? No. It would mean higher inflation and a lower wage for those currently employed. The idea that they have any hand in approving this is absurd. COSATU only cares to help its members gain higher wages. Anything that works against that is a negative. Would they choose this option over the previously established one? Yes.

Now, SACP is a communist party. What does a communist party want? Wealth distribution. Would they push youth employment grants? Yes. Would they push for unemployment funding? Yes. Would they push for career schools? Yes. Would they push for universal employment? Yes.

The two have completely conflicting opinions on some things and this is one of those things.

I know all that, and I never said anything that conflicts with that, so I don't know what you're misunderstanding.

My original statement was based on a simple sequence of events.

- ANC and government proposes and supports a youth wage subsidy
- COSATU hates the youth wage subsidy, fearing it would impact negatively on their members, so they kick up a lot of fuss
- ANC and government uhms and ahs around for a while, then propose a job seekers grant as an alternative

Simple enough to see they did it to appease COSATU.
