sorry if i posted in the wrong thread!!! i wanted advice on web and domain hosting... who's the best of the best for domain and web hosting in south africa for businesses!! thanks....:D

What kind of service are you looking for? For virtual/shared hosting you should consider Hetzner and Afrihost. When it comes to more dedicated hosting – co-location with own server management – consider IS or Verizon Business.

whats the difference??? whats with co-location with own server management?

Shared hosting means in other words, a few clients piggy back off one server. Own server management means that you sort of own the server, it's also known as a dedicated server, dedicated to your company or business.

Shared is cheaper, dedicated is not.

If you are just looking for website hosting coupled to a domain you own, then have a look at this company:

www.texo.co.za

Their prices are more than attractive and they also have great support. I've got 4 domains with them.

Texo are capable of many things, so if you require a product/service not shown, just ask if it's possible for them to accommodate you.

If you are looking for the worlds best ISP, then have a look at www.webafrica.co.za I just drool to think of how great they are, hehe ;) :D :p

I agree on both suggestions. For a medium to large business I'd only suggest these two. If you are a small business you should try Texo (link in my sig).
Most of my clients use Afrihost and Hetzner and they have good stats. I personally use Texo and love everything about it.

I would not worry about dedicated and co - location if you are just starting out with a website. If you are just looking for a domain name and webspace then I recommend that you start off with a shared account.

Please feel free to see our offerings from the link in my signature - we offer true support and reliability (ask us for our uptime reports).

Keep away from Paradigmsolutions

Just make sure you stay way from www.paradigmsolutions.co.za

Their prices are really low, but as I have found recently support is nearly non-existent.

I have been waiting for 5 days for them to back up my database on a client's site that got corrupted... and still nothing has happened..

This after +- 50 e-mails back and forth (you cannot get through to any of their phone lines.. either they don't answer or it is busy..)

This after I provided them with a backup file myself (ftp'd to them..)

This is true, but sometimes they screw up in your favor - I once bought a once off, one month IS account (paid via EFT) and in the second month it was still working!

In the end I felt bad and stopped using it, but that is no way to run a business
