If you're one of the lucky people globally who get this error than here is something you can try that worked for me.

1) Go to Options>Device>Advanced System Settings>Service Books (depending on your device);
2) Highlight a file 'BlackBerry Internet Service Book 2' (MUST have the '2' in the name)
3) Delete the service book.

There is no need to reboot, just go to your browser and download away.

P.S. This solution was found on this forum to fix the 'BlackBerry Browsing not working' problem. I tried it for the 'download failed' problem and it worked.

EDIT

Instead of 'BlackBerry Internet Service 2', you can rather delete 'BlackBerry Internet Service'. If you delete 'BlackBerry Internet Service 2' you will have problems downloading large files larger than 150MB especially from places like Megaupload and stuff. Removing 'BlackBerry Internet Service 2' will also remove that automatic search function in your browser where you can type a word and select 'Google' or 'Wikipedia' or whatever and it will search for it on those sites.

To get your service books back, simply go to Options>Device>Advanced System Settings>Host Routing Table. Highlight the 'Wi-Fi' and click 'menu' (BlackBerry logo button) and click 'register now'. Getting those two service books is nothing reversable. If you do a battery pull they will be restored as well.

Does this really work and what are the ways of restoring the service book if anything goes wrong?

And mine says, "blackberry internet browsing service 2". Is this the right one

Yes it works and if anything goes wrong you can go back to the service book directory and press your BB key and say un delete and it will return the service book you deleted,I know on my torch if i delete the service book and restart my phone it also restores the service book

Good luck :)

My Torch also restores the service book when I hard reset my phone. As for 'Does it work?' Yes. Like a charm. This solution ended a 2 week long search for a solution that was driving me nuts to find.

Same here but your solution solved it.
Thanks.

Hi Guys

I have been getting the same "Download failed issue" but need some clarity on which service book to delete.

Can't see to find it on os6 on my 9780.

Any help appreciated.

You're very welcome peeps. I am glad I could help.

Be carelful though, this advice works, but if you expecting the BIS to work, you might be in for a nasty surprise on your bill.

Im on a contract and deleted both service books, and it worked like a dream ( big upz to the founder of this info ) but it counts as data traffic so you could find that you being billed for the downloads until you restore the internet service books...

im not sure if this is the case on prepaid mtn / vodacom / cell c --- can anyone shed some light on this?

You raise a valid concern that I was worried about myself - I have never deleted both service books though. It's always been one or the other (I've only deleted BlackBerry Internet Service once - I always delete BlackBerry Internet Service 2). I've been doing this for over 5 months and haven't seen evidence of getting charged because of this.

I suppose it would be wise to ad 'Use at own risk' then.

Hmmmm...let me go and test this.
This thing was rather annoying with Vuclip where it says download failed after about 80% of a clip.

So...deleted Blackberry Internet Browsing Service.

Download Vuclip Catherine 8.3mb preview:
Download failed at 98%.
Downloaded it again and it failed at 94%.

Deleted Service Book 2 also.
Completed BUT Blackberry Bis Symbol was not showing.

Deleted Service book 2 only.
Downloading same file and BB symbol is not working and confirmed it via service status that Bis is not connected.

So, with Service Book 2 it allows you to download larger files but it does not allow you to do so under BIS.
I think that Oc might be able to clarify this.

That's very interesting. I've this for the past few months and been charged - I also haven't noticed the BlackBerry Symbol switching off either in the times that I looked for it. What is 'status service'?

if I delete service book 2 only, then I can dload larger files & it still uses BIS, but the dload speed is about 5-10kb/s, so i dont even bother downloading anymore, maybe just the odd MP3.

I've never had those download speed problems except during peak times (between about 16h00 and 21h00).

Thanks for the advice but I've got a slight problem, I only have service book 2 and once deleted the native browser won't connect. Any ideas will be highly appreciated. Device: 9800/Torch carrier: cell c postpaid
