download speeds

ok forget ping pong for now.... what download speeds are you guys seeing. state also signal strength and base station and package.

best ive seen is 16.5k at 18% strength (all 4 lights on go figure) base station 82 (which doesnt exist) on the 128k package.
 
damn dude if you get 16.5k then that is better than the package you baught since the max for the 128k is 16kB/s

gosh only saw it once... wonder how it was possible? rest of time sitting at 16k
 
Even at 16k you got a super duper system.
When I tested the 128k it averaged 12-14k
This weekend I tested the 256k system and that averages 29-33k
Tomorrow or Tuesday I'll start on the 512.

What site you testing from ?

I use Mweb simply because its not IS or Saix thus like in the middle [:)]

I've done all my local tests with this file:

busy with a download from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk sitting at the moment at 15.6k

your local test i tried.. dropped me down to 14.8k

(must be that mystery mast #82 that doesnt exist that im logged onto)
 
Hi there.

The best I've seen so far is 21% signal strength. I get pretty much constant downloads of between 32 and 34KBytes per second on the 256K package (Beta test, Durban).

If I download a file from http://www.tucows.saix.co.za I average 38k - yeah right [:D]
When I switch to GetRight it averages 31.2k which I think is more accurate - IE caches most of it while you still thinking thus giving inacurate readings.

Anyway the last hour or so I tried several downloads from USA, Germany and UK and it also sits around 30k which is pretty cool.
 
For maximum dl'd tests, I recommend using flashget.
Also try installing bit torrent and dl'ing a torrent.

These 2 programs seem to really eat every bit of bandwidth available

I second the use of Flash Get (or Reget Deluxe) - they slurp up the bandwidth nicely - ditto bit torrent (although there's the upload part of bit torrent which can be irritating, if you're d/l something at 6k and see its being upped to someone at 20k at the same time :)

Watch out though for system instability as ram gets used up using the accelerator tools, I find I have to do a restart once every day or so, to refresh ram..
Also, if you're streaming audio same time as bit torrent, you'll notice timeouts..

I havent checked downloads off local sites, mainly because there's very little local goodies I want. (Havent noticed many chinese and japanese mp3's being hosted anywhere at Tucows :P

Having made the jump from a 56k modem, to the 128 package, ANY d/l speed over 8k, is fine for me - although usually it falls into the 14+ range. Now and again if I'm pulling files off x2 http's, I'll exceed the 16k range easily - but usually Im streaming audio, pulling bit torrent, pulling off FTP's as well as browsing and/or pulling from http as well at same time..

Nicest thing about MyWireless is the thing I recall from Megawan, ie: the overall stability and bandwidth available allowing you to have a lot more different apps open and working than you could previously with just a regular modem stream..
so currently for instance, I have 8 browser windows open and streaming audio, and will shortly fire up MIRC and Cute FTP as well, and start d/l.. couldnt do that too safely on 56k modem previously..

Wonder if this kit can do any type of header compression, etc? Also, anyone know what the MTU size is of these itty bitty radio packets? Isit a sliding window? All the protocol overhead tends to chew up bandwidth, so the only way you're going to get top speeds is to do away with as much header information as possible and get the raw data thorough insted.
 
I think it was on the Sentech website that I read that the modems are actually 3Mb so you shouldn't have any problems with protocol overheads at the moment. Maybe when they start offering a 3Mb package it would definately be time to worry about that [:D]
