Drivers locked up

IMO, people started to take chances when taxi's and buses were left alone to do what they want (driving in yellow line, skipping red lights, speeding, etc). You always get the occasional idiot that does it because he feels entitled, but most people are driving like hooligans, because that is the only way to get where you need to be.

Definitely not a long term solution. It's more a bit of "Shock and Awe" to give people a bit of a fright. Probably has some success, though I don't expect to see traffic behaving much better this evening. No way it would work long term. And the Point System is comming. But I have faith though that you will be able to buy "Top Up" points at you local Metro Police Office for very reasonable rates.

It's really not that big a deal. Not at all fun I grant you, and you really don't want to do it if you can avoid it, but overall, it's not the end of the world. and it's not actually prison, it's a holding cell. (And if you don't know the difference you don't want to. Let's just say one is a 5 Star Holiday compared to the other). I have often wished far worse on people who are causing a traffic jam at 06:45 by deciding that they are entitled to turn from the middle lane because they are too special to que in the turning lane. My wife has also had a car written off because some fool felt that Stop Streets didn't apply to him. So I'm having a little difficulty having sympathy for these people when they get a little bit of a smackdown.

Kindof like a "Stop and Go penalty"? I really, really, like that idea. You should phone it in to a radio station or something. Really a nice fulfillment of "Do the Crime, Do the Time". Would drive Taxi Drivers absolutely berserk. Or make them do community service. Pointsmen duty on one of the billion out of order robots every morning. :)

P.S. Scratch the pointsman duty. I know what I would do. Do a job badly enought the first time, and they will never, ever ask you to do it again ;)

Interesting debate

With regard to the arrests, it is up to the officer on the scene to decide what action he takes based on what is allowed by the law regarding the offence.

If traffic and police were to enforce the laws to the letter you would hardly be able to move without putting your foot wrong.

I have been on traffic course and have been issued a fine book. The number of things you can write fine for is actually rather staggering.

Mine is mainly reserved for taxis and individuals who go out of their way to annoy me i.e. giving me grief when they are pulled over for doing something stupid and my pet hate people who park in disabled bays.

That been said I have hardly used my book in the past months as I have seen nothing that really necessitates a fine, although I do have to fine happy friends who love fining all the vehicles illegal parked at Brookes in PE, to me that is really mean since there isnt much parking and its mainly students.

The only time I have arrested people for traffic offenses was in cases of drunken driving, accidents and reckless and negligent driving.
 
PS Traffic offenders are never placed with violent criminals

UPDATE:

Johannesburg - The magistrate's courts in Randburg and Roodepoort have declined to prosecute motorists who were arrested in the area on Wednesday for minor trafic offences.

Public prosecutors threw out the cases against 17 minor traffic offenders that had been placed on the roll in Randburg and the same happened in Roodepoort, where there were six cases on the roll.

They said Johannesburg Metro Police could decide if they wanted to write out traffic tickets for the alleged offenders, or not.

But are drunken, reckless and negligent driving not all criminal offenses?

Yeah, those same officers that wanted to fine (in this case probably jail) someone for driving with their headlights on during the day when 702 had that whole drive-with-lights-on-to-increase-your-visibility thing which is in no way illegal?

Negligent driving would probably include not using your indicator to change lanes, I know I have done that sometimes, I'll go hand myself over to the authorities as soon as you do it...

Oooh I can't stand those twits! These offenses aren't that minor, they cause major traffic backups just so that they can try and get to their destination quicker. These guys are just cheesed off because for once in their lives they were the ones who were inconvenienced, so they claim "minor" offenses.

I agree lock them up. It doesn't really matter if the cases were thrown out by the prosecutors, the fact that they had to spend a day in a holding cell will make them think twice before deliberately ignoring traffic rules again. Good stuff Metro, hope to see more of this, and not just during the holiday season but year-round.
 
Just heard about this n the late afternoon and I gotta say I'm on the sideline but if I have to choose an opinion I'd say that it's a good thing these people were locked up. JMPD have to do this often i.e. DAILY. It's no use them drinking a Red Bull or 2 and kicking into gear for a few days and then go back to spending their day hiding in bushes with cameras. :rolleyes:
 
Exactly! There's no point in arresting a couple of arbitrary offenders in one small area for one day, and the very next day go back to watching taxis and the like belt down the emergency lane at 200 and do nothing
