Driving licence card printer broken again

Maybe, but I don't need a license department to tell me to go get them checked out but rather the fact that I can't see would motivate me.
Unfortunately motivation is lacking in a major part of our population... and being a danger to others doesn't trump most people's right to drive a vehicle in their minds.

100%. The rest of the details on the card, like birthdate, ID number etc. are pretty much immutable. Why the hell should we print a new card for that stuff?!?
Cause as I've stated it is a money making scheme, just be glad it didn't follow through with the original intent.

Yeah now you're getting into technicalities, but the basic theory is sound... a central system that registers a valid eyetest+result against your ID Number/license number is all that was ever needed.
Talking about technicalities... the Taliban got their hands on some government equipment to scan ID cards and check affiliation and were topping people for being government supporters while I was in Kabul some years back. These things designed to help can also be used by bad actors sadly. Nice when you have strong systems in place, but in the wrong hands...
Sorry - completely OT I know.

I guess you get that when people can't read and probably why they have to buy their license.

You need the government to tell people who don't give a shyte that they're blind and can kill your daughter walking to school.
Whataboutism, this could happen anywhere in the 5 years you got your previous card and it does

Yup, and in all honesty I do like the UK system as well the empowers the cops to suspend a persons license if they fail a relatively simple on the road eye test.

How will you feel when a racist cop suspends your license when your eyes are perfectly fine?

The system actually caters for that crap...

Your license gets marked as needing a proper eye test, which gets submitted to a central place in a predefined timeframe and should you need an endorsement on your license due to it, you get a new card, otherwise the "mark" is removed from your license.

and what happens to the cop?

Nothing, why should anything happen to the cop... You may have had a poor day with your eyesight and failed the basic eye test, but a legit optometrist test shows your eyesight is fine.

That's not a whataboutism, it's a point in argument in favour of enforcing regular eye tests for all drivers.

Nope it's a whataboutism, as a tragic accident can happen anywhere within that 5 year span.

Sure, this isn't pokemon. You're not gonna to catch em all. Why have driving tests to start with, people forget how to drive.

That is actually what the original intention was for the 5 year period, but it was scrapped due to them realising the ball ache. It's also why that law is in place about the expired drivers license, not card.
