DStv competitors set broadcast deadlines

ICASA.... repercussions? these two words in the same sentence? don't make me laugh ..

Will these new entrants into the market require their own custom set top boxes and dishes? A bit confused here.
This is likely. I don't think MultiChoice is willing to share their technology - there were some discussions surrounding this when the licenses were handed out. Not much since then though...

Interesting,

But they need to come to the party now with Channel offerings and pricing...
I'm not interested in any of them unless their offering is better then MC in terms of entertainment content because they very definitely won't be able to match SuperSport content at this point in time.

Unlikely that the new services could easily top the content of MC without coming in way more expensive. Besides SS have wrapped up all the major sports for a while to come.

I wonder whether MC will be laying out the red carpet to their competitors, at their own expense? :p

I think these guys could easily beat MC in terms of entertainment content.....

As for sports, I know that none of them can even come CLOSE to MC in terms of whats available.

Also, they need to launch with HD, or at the very least WideScreen content natively... otherwise I'm not interested in shifting from one ancient provider to another.

These discussions will be ongoing.....2020 more likely for real competition. Personally i think IPTv will be the way forward. Once LLU happen, companies can offer that and MORE!!!

I find it very interesting that they were given such a short deadline to start broadcasting, yet Neotel have been allowed to go on for years without offering a fixed-line package to consumers? Double standards from ICASA again?

crap man!! I'm fast beginning to loose interest in TV all together!! becoming way to expensive now. I'd rather put that money into my internet connection!! I get to CHOOSE what I want - when I want!!

with no ads too :p

To have to get another set top unit, damn. Thats not cool. Also limits you to how and when you can change between these broadcasters. Surely you could use the same dish?

But damn, already we going to have to be getting another set top box for SABC and ETV digital TV, and now this.

If they plan to also broadcast in HD, your tv or receiver is going to need a minimum of 2 HDMI inputs or up to 4!

Depending on the frequency they operate on you may even need another LNB. Anyone know if the LNB's these installers put in are universal or not?

I highly doubt that they are universal, would be more expensive, but I suppose it depends on the installer. Unless installers are only allowed to use certain LNB's when installing DSTV setups?

i would love to know what they actually going to broadcast....

I think if these guys want to come in and give MC a hard time they must have Pay per view right from the beginning and all channels must be HD

This will give MC a bit of a run for there money

I would think that a lot of the channels will be the same like Discovery and they will have a few movie channels and one thing is guaranteed they will have all the sports channels they know how important that is to convert people from MC

This is going to be quite interesting.

The only down side to all this is they will start with a 2 year contract story if you want MC or super 5 media and the decoders and dishes will all be free.

I just don't like signing contracts better to keep my options open

ICASA should prescribe specifications for a satellite receiver that will work for all broadcasters, thus levelling the playing field, and making the entry to market easier.

Well that would mean that ICASA would have to think about the consumer that's against there mandate oh hang on thinking is also against there mandate.

Getting paid kickbacks and not achieving anything useful that is in there mandate

A bit confused here.

Yes, having spoken to both companies I can confirm that each one will require a separate installation.

I truly believe that we will be able to use the same dishes. It is only a different frequency and angle that need to be changed.

As for the decoders, you can already access free-to-air channels on DSTV's decoder. What will stop the new broadcaster from doing the same. The decoder is not the property of MC and it will be better to just get them to modify it.

Whether this will work I don't know. But it's the same as telkom saying you cannot use their adsl routers with another isp. I know it is not the same but it will be possible. South Africa is not the only country using the Sd-pvr and normal decoders, if we were it would have cost 3 times as much to purchase.

Tomo,

And they confirmed it? I posted before seeing yours, so that will almost kill of any ambitions for them to be competitive. They will have to be innovative to attract clients. I must say that I am a bit disgusted by the way DSTV used it's market dominance to screw the consumer. All the programs they claim is NEW ala Discovery is at least 6 months old. (where initially shown).

I've said this before... They can't buy rights to proper content before they have the subscriber numbers to back the costs, otherwise they will fail. They also can't get their subscriber numbers up without proper content. Their content will be mediocre, at best, for a long time.
