DStv explains repeats

7evithan, I've already asked my installer, we're out of range of the Sky satellite.

Multichoice called; the said stop telling people about Sky, you'll cause a riot if their customers realise that Sky offers IIRC 400 channels for less than Multichoice charges for 50. They prefer their customers *cough* cash-cows *cough* to be ignorant.

Why should it increase, it is self creating content. and it would have a ready made market, if effective ads get placed around it.

Because its MC, and you'll won't have a choice.

You will never be able to escape repeats no matter which satellite / cable TV service you get.

Lets say that 100 TV channels broadcasting 24hrs a day = 2400hrs of programming broadcast in one day.

There's no ways production companies could even produce a fraction of the material required to fill 2400hrs of broadcast time a day. Never mind the costs involved in producing a documentary, movie or series.

Reruns also ensure maximum exposure for producers and advertisers.

Gary explains the DSTV repeats in plain English...

1) we know you pay nearly 3 times more than satellite or cable services in other countries, but this is South Africa and you are used to being shafted so suck it!
2) we want to make as much money as possible that is why we advertise AND use a subscriber model, that way we make twice as much out of you poor saps.
3) We are too cheap to pay for more content (like the sci-fi channel or older classic or blockbuster movies), so we only subscribe to the cheapest crappiest international feeds.
4) We figure that if you are dumb enough to pay such exorbitant rates then you are dumb enough not to notice that we are showing you the same programs over and over again anyway.
5) We supplement all of our content with local crap, thereby fleshing out the manure and making it more palatable to your bovine taste buds.
6) All those statistics about the number of repeats in international markets were just thumbsuck figures anyway. We figure if we just throw a bunch of stats at you, you will get that same glazy eyed look as when another repeat comes on.

Yours in the interests of loads of cash,
Multichoice! ;)

would be 10x funnier if it wasn't so close to the probable truth :o

If it wasn't for all the SuperSport channels, I'd cancel my DSTV subscription.

All these "new" BBC channels that started recently, are just more channels showing repeats.

Mr Bean... yippee... :(

I wish someone with some 'clout' would ask DSTV why, if all the series are 'sponsored', do we still have to pay so much. I mean, if companies are paying for the series and you add the ton of revenue from the thousands of ads, why are we paying so much?

Don't you know how greedy the media24/naspers cartel is? If not, let me tell you they are very greedy and that's why you pay so much.

that is just a nightmare of frustration ......

yea they have very bad and old forum software
it looks like it comes from the 90's :p

they are going to upgrade and have already asked us for some suggestions
i told them to visit the mybroadband forum ;)

I dumped DSTV in favour of ADSL. I am not sorry but I do miss BBC Prime and Sky News.

When I had DSTV I calculated that a movie gets repeated/shown 65 times across the channels in a year.

For mindless entertainment I get a DVD from the rental place for R12 a movie. That way I watch what I want, when I want and no repeats! (unless I fall asleep)

At +/- R6000 a year for DSTV thats a lot movies from the DVD rental place.

and I'd do the exact same thing if not for the odd good series and the sport they show :o

bbc prime is no more, its BBC Entertainment now. many new content
I don't watch movies allot on dstv, I watch the doccy channels and some rugby
my pvr is constantly full, dstv has lots of content. dont just get stuck on one channel.
if it wasn't for repeats I would have a hard time watching all the stuff I want.

I gave up DSTV before PVR's came out and I am not a rugby fan (yes I know thats unpatriotic :o)

My biggest gripe is when they cut a movie off near the end. most recent example was a movie called indian summer. gets to like 5-10 minutes before the end and just suddenly goes to commercials. i mean wtf is that all about?

other gripe is mnet stars. has to be the biggest pos channel ever. its a collection of about 6 movies. they show each movie 1/2 an hour later each day so lets say movie 1 is on at 8 am today then its on at 8:30 am tomorrow and 9 am the next day. has to be the most annoying carp in history.
