DSTV HD-TV on track

I think we will have to buy new decoders and dishes to get HD and then buy new decoders and dishes again when they release widescreen HD. Nowhere does it mention this HD upgrade will be widescreen?

Multichoice will be broadcasting in 720p which is a 16:9 (widescreen) HD-standard. There is no 4:3 (regular aspect-ratio) HD-standard.

Why we even have to pay for the decoder is beyond me. It is not like you can do anything with it after you cancel you DSTV, except for using it as a expensive digital clock.

Yeah the 4th tuner is supposed to be for enhanced EPG - but the will prolly load the box with so much Interactive ***** that it won't run properly.

Horizontal , Vertical and prolly Circular polarity.

Sky in the UK briefly had this Pace Model available for its HD offering but it was not very popular and quite unreliable, the boxes tended to die just after a year and out of warranty, so I hoppe this isnt just Pace offloading their old inferior stock to the SA market.

Why is everybody moaning about having to upgrade their installation & decoders? When you upgrade stuff, that's what you have to do.

It's as ludicrous as complaining you need to buy a new modem when going from ISDN to ADSL.

If DSTV goes for mainly sport first in HD they can go suck it from my side.

But if I get lots of movies and music in HD then maybe we can talk...
I wonder how much more they gonna charge a month for this, Also wonder if there would be some trade in option?

@ mercurial - Don't bother looking for a HDTV till the offering is actually out, I'm pretty sure there will be some specials released along side the decoder...


/edit - Does anyone know if the audio will be compressed as well? If so what method would be used?

To get the full benefit of the HD PVR all 4 tuner inputs need signal.
This would require an LNB upgrade or if you have a twin already, the addition of a multiswitch.

The HD PVR is a single view STB. To watch 2 channels you would need to use Multiview to slave another STB (1110 or PVR) on to the primary STB's smartcard. Extra cost for the double viewing environment will be the same as now which is I tink R50-00.
