Yes, that's what's going to happen. If you look at the schedule for MNet HD, it contains such programmes as CSI New York and Miami, Dresden Files, Reaper and other series in HD. The first movie to be shown is the HD version of Die Hard 4.0 followed by other cool movies like 300. There's also animal shows and sport in HD.

It seems like lots of local content is already produced in widescreen format - I wonder if it is 480p? I would think that upscaling this to 720p may actually look better than the current SD channels?

480p is extended def and is for ntsc regions
i think you mean 576p
yes there are sd cams that shoot in sd progressively like the panasonic aj-sdx 900
but most things are probably produced in hd these days

Why do we only get 1 HD channel (namely MNET HD) on launch whereas Australia's Foxtel were able to launch their HD service with multiple HD channels?

yes 480p is NTSC. 720x480.
PAL is 720x576.
Most overseas content is probably produced in HD. But locally only a hand full full of commercials and films are produced in HD, and it is growing slowly. There is 1 local game show being produced in HD i think, and talks of a few other shows.
In general, to produce in HD locally would cost around 50% more than producing in SD.
That panasonic camera you mentioned is a DVCPRO camera, most of them has the option to shoot anamorphic widescreen pictures.

True... so used to reading/talking about 480p and 720p....
Either way, I wonder if local sport and shows are filmed at in progressive scan or not? If they are, I think the content will work well upscaled to HD.

Most local sport is actually being shot in HD. Other content not really, and mostly interlaced over progressive.
From my experience any SD footage upconverted to HD looks a bit on $hitty side. Proper conversion costs a quite a lot as well.

Got mine last week and the image quality difference is amazing! Much more detailed, sharp and vivid.
Now we just need more HD channels. The decoder is a POS at this stage though. Full of bugs and crippled with missing functionality.

Screen burn FTL!Anyway, the lineup for MNET-HD isn't too awe inspiring at the moment but I'd kill to see some decent pics of Die Hard 4 in HD. The guys on the DStv forum are raving about the insane visual and audio quality of the broadcast.
