DStv launches new channel

True, every situation is different - We however had the ADSL along with the DSTV and was just a case of cutting the one or the other as we can't afford to keep both unfortunately.
And the internet won
we can pretty much dowload anything that DSTV has to offer anyway - even without the Netflix the ADSL is a no brainer

I always had a hunch that Multichoice and the SABC are sleeping together! Looks like Multichoice is the one on top. :wtf:

It will be a pleasure to watch many of the SABC productions again, some such as
Arende, Vyfster, The Big Time are reasonably well known, and have been shown
on SABC in recent years.
But there are many such as Sonkring, The Villagers, The Dingleys, Nommer Asseblief etc etc
which are not as well known and to my knowledge have rarely or if ever been rerun on SABC.
(I may have missed a few, I watch TV randomly since the early 90's)
But the bigger issue is that SABC is in the wrong to proceed in this manner, viz a commercial
release of pre 1990 SABC productions onto DSTV.
Memory fails me as to when SABC first took advertising onto it's TV scheduling, but it would
be about the late 1980's or so.
All SABC productions, let us say prior to 1990 are:
1. More than 25 years old.
2. Paid for in part by South African Tax Payers.
3. Paid for in large part by License fees (actually paid in by viewers in the 70's and 80's)
4. Copyright, or property of the SABC, ergo the South African public.
SABC Should :
1.) Digitize all this material in their archives.
2.) Provide free re-runs on existing SABC channels.
3.) Release productions starting from 1974 on a year rolling basis to
a public internet archive such as archive.org, or a similar one but that
adheres to copyright and commercial redistribution rules.
4.) ancient history productions such as 99 Caroline Street which
are almost 40 years old are (or should be) ready to be placed into the public domain.
(Hard to believe Annelisa Weiland acted in that series and is still going strong on Sewende Laan today.)
SABC will have to choke on their brandy-and-cokes when they rerun golden oldies
like Opdrag and Brug 14 but they are of historical interest among other reasons.
Then there is the matter of audio material, radio serials from the 60's and 70's, such
as Squad Cars, Jet Jungle, Tracey Dark and many others.
these at the very least deserve a release to a public audio internet archive, and
made available to public libraries and institutions such as tape-aids-for-the-blind etc.
Then there are the numerous TV programs and series that were dubbed into Afrikaans
from the original, what happens to them? Things like Sweeny Todd -> Blitzpatrollie
should maybe left to lie with the other sleeping dogs, but what about the French and
German dubbed programs, like Derrick, Misdaad, Die Meisie van Avignon; which it is true,
may be watched in the original, with subtitles, but why let watchable versions which are understandable
to millions in the the Afrikaans dub, just simply lie and rot?
I certainly don't know the chain of custody for a series like Vlug van die Onregverdiges which is
an Afrikaans dub of the German TV series Michel Strogoff which is based on the novel of the same
name by Jules Verne and is set in Tsarist Russia and concerns the hero's adventures among
the Golden Horde a sort of Russian "Western" if you like, but much more fun and watchable.
I certainly know I would love to watch a rerun of that one... although the original is most probably
available on the internet, let us just say I am now living in a bandwitdh constrained area...and
would appreciate not having to burn my megabytes up in that manner.

This is a SABC channel and not a Multichoice+SABC channel, this is just pr BS from dstv. The channel WILL be available for free on dtt, sabc already make that clear.
I don't get the hate in this thread, if you don't like it, dont frikken watch it. I don't like 80% of all afrikaans productions but i can understand the very low cost of a free rerun channel that'll be enjoyed by some and will run on 100% automation.

My argument is it doesn't work for everybody. Some people just want to change the channel with it working out the box. Nothing simpler than Dstv. Besides if you don't need the dsl there's no sense in what else it can be used for.

The SABC, this morning on SABC2's "Morning Live" show, again stated that the new channel would be available to "All packages". yet, when those with the EasyView package try and access the channel, one gets an E16 error which means the new channel is NOT available to all packages.
This is unacceptable. I fully intend raising this with the BBCSA on the grounds that the lead up to the launch of this new channel has been misleading.
It flies in the face of other matters raised recently, notably the claim by both the SABC and MC that the deal is a pure business arrangement. In the recent court battle, MC and the SABC both indicated that this new channel is similar to the deal regarding channel 404, which is available to EasyView package holders.
This is unacceptable. I fully intend raising this with the BBCSA on the grounds that the lead up to the launch of this new channel has been misleading.

Strange since when I try to access an unavailable channel it tells me it doesn't exist and it isn't available in the channel lineup either. Wrt to the new channel however MC never stated it would be on all packages afaik and specifically stated Premium, Extra, Compact and Family only.
Seems like crap in any case as there's no classics and they're using it as a repeat channel.

This is the point, the SABC has consistently perpetuated the statement that the new channel will be made available to "ALL" packages, right up to yesterday morning, where once again in an interview on Morning Live, with a MC and a SABC representative.
MC which is the partner to the contract, then on the 30 April, released their own press statement, where they then stated it would only be available to selected packages.
There are many issues raised in this whole debacle.
(a) Misleading the public and creating an expectation which now has not materialised.
(b) Can material produced using taxpayer's money originally for FTA, now be commercialised by a pay TV operator?
(c) Why is one channel under the so -called contract (ch 404) available on all packages, and another (ch 156) available on only selected channels?
(d) If this is just considered to be a repeat channel, then why did the SABC not simply make the content available on their existing SABC 1, 2, 3 channels?
