DStv pay-TV competitors give feedback

The pay-tv competition thing is starting to sound like the "this is the year for Linux on the desktop" claims. They said the same thing last year.

Well said porchrat! Might I add, sounds like the "lack of broadband penetration" saga that's always published on this bulletin!

blah..., blah, blah..., blah, blah..., blah!

okay, how is this payTV different from normal SABC? I have to pay them in order to watch any other TV Station. And now they almost defunct, but I still have to pay them?

1. We don't want to pay for channels or bouquets anymore. We want to watch what we choose to watch, when we want to watch it.

2. Walk on Water sounds like it's going to be an epic fail.

Walking on Water (WoW) has distinguished itself from the other prospective pay-TV operators in that it plans to implement a family friendly service which will not include programming that features nudity, sex, violence or coarse language.

yeah, good luck with that - who would wanna see that?

From what I recall Multichoice broadcast DSTV illegally without a licence for years before that was finalised, why are the others waiting?

Many content and channel agreements with Dstv end in 2010.Channel providers get paid an x amount per sub or a fixed amount per month if under a certain amount of subs. For MC to still be the exclusive holder on certain channels they need to pay a premium per sub.Channels like natgeo and history have their own permanent transponder (dmc) on T12.CNN and Discovery have their own direct powervu feeds to Multichoice. They are not dependant on MC to get their content here.

Set Africa, which was started by an ex MC employee, was not very happy with MC's sub income and also move to Hitv in Nigeria.MC had to expand their subs to the dstv compact to keep them happy.

Agreements with MC are not as watertight as they make it out to be.

Has been a dstv customer on and off. Got bored with 3rd repeat. WoW - fail Who wants to get decoder, get new dish/re-allign dish for 5 channels of that genre? odm - wait and see Will make the jump should they offer selection of channels. I dont mind the delay in providers launching, only hope the anticipation is not wasted (anyone remember neotel hype)

+1

I wonder how much local stuff they are going to be forced to screen, or if that is only a restriction with sabc and etv...

I would get that- im tired of hollywood and even comedians adding sex to everything to compensate for a lack of creativity in their craft. anyway maybe its just me, but I dont see the thrill in sitting on the couch with potato chip crumbs down my shirt watching some other dude getting some.

The violence issue... now that I dont have a problem with....

I am not convinced we'll see this arrive in 2010 or provide real competition to Dstv.

Unless there is some really good programming which Dstv per chance missed out on or it's dirt cheap, it's going to be really difficult for a new entrant to crack the market wide open.

Perhaps Walking on Water might succeed, as their target market is specific and their is possible opportunity. The rest ... the best of luck to you all. You're going to need it.
