DStv premium vs 4Mbps uncapped ADSL

The article mentions the legality of Netflix in this country. Can anyone elaborate on the laws relating to this?

Live streaming of sporting events through Supersport, BoxOffice movie rentals, DStv On Demand and DStv Catch Up offer subscribers legal options to keep themselves entertained.

They are not offering Supersport by any other means than Premium, are they?

Actually it's time to dump the DSTV Premium package as the only reason I have that is for the F1GP and now with 4 mbits I can stream it quite easily.
Going to the Compact package will allow me to upgrade to 10 mbits business uncapped :)

Mono/Duopolies in the SA Telecoms industry are a bane! Telkom/VodacoMTN/Multichoice - all getting away with murder, but their day of reckoning will come and when it does I hope they die a quick painful death!

I'm able to stream 720p videos on my 2mb connection. since telkom updated our line everybody watches far less DSTV. what's keeping me away from Netflix is that my area experiences cable theft.

Can you still stram the sport if you only have a Compact package.

Canned my premium DStv subscription ages ago. Sickbeard + SABnzbd sorts out my series, and the occasional sporting event I'd wanna watch is usually available on the internet... and not just dodgy websites either... I've watched live sports from the event's official website for free!
Plus I can tightly control what the kids watch, and the limited viewing selection means their tv time is automatically reduced, meaning more time for proper activities, rather than being stuck on the couch watching cr@p all day.

And all of that on a 2Mbps/50GB capped account!

How are you able to do that? I struggle to do that on my 5.5mbps (Adsl sync), 4mbps mweb premium account...? I can download the movie from youtube @ 500kb/s+-, but to stream it, is a pain. :(

MultiChoice’s DStv service has a dominant position in South Africa’s pay-TV market – and for good reasons.

What good reason? They are a monopoly and making misuse of it. That is why Starsat is struggling to get into the market.

You forgot the PVR fee. Every internet based service can be paused (and more). Monochoice is actually R740.

I won't even go into how vastly inferior DSTV is, in every way.

I maintained through the years that DStv can charge the prices they do since they have no actual competition in South Africa. Sure, you can get your movies/series/shows/sport by other means via the internet but it is not mainstream knowledge on how to do it and there is very little quality guarantees for the non-legal methods. What kills content streaming via the internet is the TCO of DStv premium vs the TCO for 4Meg ADSL.

My Setup:
Telkom Line = R157
4Meg ADSL via Afrihost = R279
4Meg Uncapped via Connection = R260
Total = R696 vs DStv Premium HD = R740. There is however no content included with the ADSL TCO yet.

Unfortunately not, that is the only reason I still have DSTV.

...or the main reason I watch much less sport. F1 free for 5 years now. Radio 2000 or cricinfo for the odd bit of cricket and streaming every second Stormers game.

On cricinfo: I see a message on the mobile app now that states that they have to delay scores now due to "a legal injunction". DSTV playing a-hole maybe?

Quality: Pirate bay wins (1080p vs 360p)
Cost: ADSL wins, since you're going to be paying something for internet whether you use it for entertainment or not. At least R150. R546 + content costs < R740.

much morals. such flex

You're mistaken, DSTV's morals aren't flexible, they're non-existent.

I think you missed my point. At R740, the content is delivered in 720p and 576i respectively, as well as being legal. Adding that to the ADSL option adds around R120 for Netflix+Unotelly. Not sure what legal option there are for Sport, such as those offered by BT Sports and SkySports.

I was a dstv user for the same reason as you.
Last year I totally killed the dstv service and went Netflix route. And I stream F1.
No need for compact at all.
