DStv premium vs 4Mbps uncapped ADSL

Also gotta remember that you aren't just paying ADSL for streaming - you are getting internet too.
Netflix or not I would still have my same internet.

Some content is delivered in low bitrate 720p, most is poorly formatted, low bitrate SD crap. Take channel 189 for example, or Discovery channel. 16:9 content on a 4:3 SD broadcast, so effectively 432i (216p, lol). Pirate bay is 1080p, up to date and with better quality control than Monochoice.

ADSL is actually R546, since you're paying at least R150 for internet anyway, so R666 including Netflix and Unotelly.

No idea about sports. Don't watch them, don't care.

well, Netflix do not have broadcasting rights in South Africa. By allowing the loophole that is being used to continue they are putting themselves at risk of losing their right to broadcast enitrely. I believe they are obliged to monitor and unregister any user not in compliance with their licencing.


Therefore if you are using those loopholes you stand the chance of being disconnected at any time, and if someone is bored or has something to prove, an appointment for a day in court.

I just dumped DSTV. Got to the point where I couldn't go through the TV guide for a week and find something I hadn't already seen or worth watching. Too much too pay for such a limited service.

Of course, it would be great if Telkom would get my exchange past 2mb. Nothing worse than wanting to upgrade but not being able to.
 
I have a 2meg uncapped with Telkom and I can't even stream 480p smoothly from Youtube.
 
One aspect of the cost comparison to take heed of is that most people in the premium market will have both internet and DStv. The cost difference on the upside is the cost of their upgrade (if needed) while the downside is R740 per month. It can work out far cheaper to ditch DStv entirely for this market segment, but sport will continue to buoy this market for a few more years...
 
I would ditch it and go the streaming route but that would then interfere with my online gaming which I cant accept.
The alternative would be two adsl lines but then it makes no sense at all.
So for now Im stuck with dstv.
 
Where is everyone watching F1 (decent quality) for free? I'm not talking about wiziwig etc

I use AceStream and leech off the SkySportsF1 torrent. You can pick it up from Wiziwig when the broadcast starts or you can Google the AceStream code for SkySportsF1. EuroSport HD occasionally carries a F1 race but in a language other than English. If you have a PS3 you can install the BBC Sport app and watch it in HD from there as well. Used the latter for the Bahrain testing.

have to point out it's 720p on youtube when no one else is using the net at home. I am on Telkom uncapped I think your problem might be your ISP
 
Once you make the move away from DSTV you will never look back. No adverts, just that makes it worth while (I know you can avoid them with pvr) but the up to date series available is unlimited eztv.it DSTV has nothing compared to these choices and to keep track www.episodecalendar.com. Only sport it lacks and you can watch the good sport live on DSTV on demand I am sure grandad is never going to watch it online so use his.

Good TV is expensive anywhere in the world. A few weeks ago on the TWiT podcast, they were talking about this, and in USA, to get the same kind of bouquet as DSTV, they were looking at $50-$100 - yes, they get stuff a few weeks ahead of DSTV, but EVERYBODY hates their content providers, we're not alone here.


UK's equivalent of DSTV seems to be Sky, which I do believe is even more expensive than DSTV, and as hated as much by the people over there.


The issue isn't that DSTV is a monopoly so much as the content creators are clinging on to and controlling where their (overpriced) content goes, DSTV is just the middle man in this problem.
 
Besides sport, it also seems that you need DSTV Premium if you like movies, but the DSTV website is rather vague on which movie channels have HD (720p) content. I would just like to point out that for about two-thirds the price of DSTV Premium or 4 Meg uncapped ADSL, I can hire a 1080p Blu-ray every day of the month from my local store! Go figure....

edit: No, I don't watch that much TV, but it gives a good idea on how much you need to watch before either alternate option starts seeming like a good deal.

DSTV will have a good stream of customers for a long time, purely because of its simplicity.... plug in, switch on, view.
even if my parents and many other family members can get 10Mbps ADSL i would not recommend other solution, purely coz they dont have the tech savvy needed to manage, and no desire to improve their skills.... many people like that , dont know how to do, dont want to know, just want the basics. I don't have patience for tech support outside of the office :-)
They can afford to have the easy way, and take what they get.
Me, i'm more full of crap :-)

You get little boxes - like the Roku - that are incredibly easy to use.
