DStv Family is only going up by R16 - the question to me is whether you think it offers value at even the old price of R219. We're still on the (now disbanded by DStv) Select1 package which has the same pricing - with that, you still get Sky News, but don't get some channels offered on Family .. thinking of changing as a result .. maybe even down to the R99 one & signing up for some or other streaming service to compensate.

What I now find strange about http://starsat.co.za/packages/ is that you can no longer click on the package name to see what channels are offered on it, to make meaningful comparisons between their's & DStv's. I also don't believe the no. of channels they state - 40 and 80 - are the nos. they can offer. Look at how many are on the channels page. EDIT: checked, and there are 14 x 6 = 84 ; so, they have 84 channels, but mostly junk.

You also can't work out from http://starsat.co.za/channels/ page, which packages they relate to. It's like they're trying to hide which channels they offer with which packages. Unless someone knows more ? I'd also consider changing to them if I could determine more from the site.

Well, Supersport is actually really good. Possibly the best sports service overall on the planet. We get everything included in one fee, incl coverage of every single major sporting event of any relevance to our region.

Every single foreigner I've had stay at my place has gone on about our sport coverage. In the UK a comprehensive HD Sky Sports package costs around the equivalent of R1.2k, and has much less content.
 
DSTV - digging their own grave one price hike at a time.

Doubt it would have worked for very much longer if it's the SD model.

REASONS TO TRADE IN YOUR SD PVR DECODER

DStv 2017 price hike coming in April

Cape Town – DStv subscribers in South Africa will again pay more from 1 April with MultiChoice hiking monthly subscription fees for the year.
MultiChoice is telling DStv subscribers that it is trying to keep subscription fees down in South Africa's tough economic climate.
DStv Family subscribers face the biggest price hike: from R219 to R235 – a jump of 7.3%. That is well above the current headline consumer inflation rate of 6.6%.
All the other DStv monthly price hikes are below the current inflation rate.
It's not yet clear by how much M-Net analogue subscribers' monthly subscription fee will increase.
DStv Premium subscribers will have to fork out R789 per month from April for MultiChoice's most expensive service, although it represents an increase of just 3.95% – the smallest increase out of all the packages.
Last year the DStv Premium increase was a massive 8.58%. It's however not surprising that DStv Premium subscribers are getting the smallest percentage increase this year.
The overall percentage of DStv Premium subscribers as part of MultiChoice's total subscribers base has been falling in 2016 and slid from 22% to 18% ((2.24 million subscribers to 2.005 million).
That's according to MultiChoice's results for the 6 months until the end of September 2016.
MultiChoice likely wants to stem or reverse this trend as subscribers have been opting away from the top tier, not seeing it as representing enough value.
DStv Extra subscribers will pay R489 from 1 April 2017 – a 6.53% increase. The DStv Extra increase was 8% in 2016.
DStv Compact is increasing from R345 to R365, an increase of 5.79%. The DStv Compact increase was 8.2% in 2016.
The subscription fees of MultiChoice's cheapest two offerings, DStv Access (R99) and DStv EasyView (R29) will remain unchanged.
The monthly access fee (R85), individual rentals for DStv BoxOffice movies (R35) and DStv decoder insurance will also remain unchanged.

Two contributing factors
Two things are likely influencing MultiChoice's smaller than usual annual DStv price hike.
Firstly, the South African rand that took an incredible beating in 2016 is recovering and on a strengthening trend.
Since the same time last year the South African rand has strengthen almost 25% against the American dollar.
MultiChoice and M-Net must buy foreign content like American shows and films and broadcasting rights for sports in dollar and pay certain channels on the DStv platform as part of carriage deals in the global currency.
Secondly a flurry of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) players are pecking around MultiChoice's pay-TV nest, with all the recent entrants looking to steal an egg or two where they can.
Netflix, friendly foil ShowMax from same-stable Naspers, Amazon's Prime Video, ONTAPtv.com from China's PCCW Global, PrideTV and other streamers now all offer local South African watch-and-gorge services.

DSTV will be getting a rude awakening sooner than they anticipate. Subscribers will be canceling their subscriptions in their droves ( Voting Poll suggested just that .......that 37% will be canceling ! This is just on this forum, when the word get's out on social networks and in the general public domain.................... 37% will increase to over 50% ???

DSTV because of your so COOL sports content you have put the noose over your neck without knowing it !:sick:

Seems like DSTV will become a Sports Subscriber in the future - subscribers loyal to their sports coverage will DEMAND just to have this package ( What they are willing to pay for it, well that is their prerogative ! Sport highlights and results is sufficient for me, as sports each and every day, not wanting to miss a live match, or whatever becomes another meaningless life habit !!! There is more to life than sitting in front of your Telly, watching endless sport matches. Get connected and view what you want to - when you want to - Online..........:whistle::whistle::whistle:

I had no idea it was that bad...

People here will stream of course, but even if you add every ADSL and Fibre connection in the country together you don't come close to those premium numbers.
 
It's also BS to blame R/$ exchange, DSTV have those contract prices fixed for a term period when they sign-up. Then also get discounts for the more subscribers they add to content.

Rand Weakens: DSTV: "ya no, we have to increase the prices due to the weak rand"
Rand Strengthens: DSTV: "Ya no okes, umm, we will give you one month free if you pay upfront for a year, but we will still increase prices.

Only sport I watch is cricket and F1, both of which are obtainable online. In fact, their F1 coverage is extremely sub-par because they get the (probably cheaper) watered down public broadcaster versions - as opposed to Sky F1.
