DStv price increases announced

question:
If DSTV is trying to stay a thing in south africa with the rise of netflix vpn, VIDI and other VOD systems, how is a price rise a good idea?
seriously, they couldn't have missed the ball harder!

They don't have to worry about the VOD services as they aren't competition. Their response to piracy based services such as netflix has been to bring shows a soon as they air in the US with their express thing but once again they know that while piracy is a threat it isn't legitimate competition and they can put pressure on content providers to crack down on such services in the long run.

Not really, Netflix is coming to South Africa next year. We are behind, Netflix starts in Australia and New Zealand next month, the setup there was similar to what it is here with DSTV.

IMO it is the local content providers that are going to be under the whip, they may find their sources overseas changing their terms and conditions.

It will start working like overseas, where the movie houses and broadcasters (like DSTV) have exclusive access to the content for a few months, and then it moves to the VOD suppliers, like Netflix and Vidi.

Since when did Netflix become piracy?

It is copyright infringement what else do you call it.

Netflix is a licensed provider. You are paying them for a service. Copyright infringement has nothing to do with regions...

They should offer a sports bouquet for R199. Would not be surprised if they attract a heap of new subscriptions that would financially outweigh the fiscal loss from existing premium downgrades..

IMO they should make it R100 per sports channel.

The complete sports nuts would then stay on premium, as it would be too expensive for them to switch, but people like me, who watch just one or two sports, would subscribe whereas presently we don't.

Accessing content not licensed for you region is piracy.

Yes, just like ordering DVD's from Amazon is illegal, as those disks are licensed for a different region.

This applies even though the UK is in the same DVD region, as the distribution region is different.

Oh, and buying DVD's/Blurays from Takelot that were distributed for a different region would also be illegal, as well as most books on Kalahari.

Maybe trying to milk it dry just before those arrive. Still a bad decision from the likes of it. They forgot to factor in e-toll, fuel levies, excise duties, tax increases etc.

Accessing content without permission is copyright infringement. There's no legal term such as piracy. Accessing content out of licensing terms is breach of contract at most.

Correct, there are no law in South Africa for 'piracy'. There is not even a legal definition. You are right, the only time any person can be charged, either for fraud or copyright infringement, is when a company like Netflix lays a charge in the US (as that was where the misrepresentation was made, and no prosecution can be implemented in SA).

Locally, they can do nothing. They cannot even implement any law preventing users from accessing such online services, unless they ban watching movies and series via the Internet in total.

Never heard of anyone being prosecuted for accessing Netflix. Never heard of anyone ever being prosecuted for downloading movies.
