DStv raising prices next month

yip dstv is expensive but thats the way it works. when you have the market share you have the power. personally i would pay R200-R250 a month just for the sports channels and scrap the rest if it were possible. I highly doubt Top TV will ever offer the same quantity/quality of sport that Supersport does. Hope i'm wrong because if they do then that would be the day I change.
 
What are the sponsors for the sport on DSTV for huh? The sponsors are there to bring the price down. Not up!

You buy just the decoder at the shop and the installer brings the dish+LNB+bracket all for free with installation :)

You can also buy the decoder from the installer directly.
 
Standards for 3d broadcasts are complete:) I expect a 3d channel by end of yr. So I totally understand the hikes. Where the are price hikes there is also some niche value, so if u can't afford it, keep mouthing off.

So, R200 for decoder, R219 subscription and what is the installation price? So far everything is covered under one months subscription of DSTV...
 
Tried the internet thing and unless you use it for Business as well - it's far more expensive and time consuming than DSTV.
I think of endless nights seeing download speeds of 20k/s and then timing out at 3am or ten seconds after I have left the damn computer.
4mb uncapped is too expensive as well chaps!
 
Show me an 1mb internet unshaped connection plus uncapped for same price as DSTV.
And I'll be on it faster than the ANC can steal my tax money.
 
You can, of course, watch about 20 DSTV channels for free on W7 at 36.0E

This isn't a valid budgeting comparison because for most people (I think?) Internet access is a sunk cost and inelastic expense. That is, it's not a matter of whether you spend on "Internet" or "DSTV" (one or the other), because you NEED Internet regardless of whether or not you have DSTV (which you don't "need"). Therefore, the valid budgeting comparison is the DIFFERENCE between what you're currently paying for Internet access, and an uncapped connection that allows you to instead download what you want to watch rather than get DSTV.

For example, if you are currently paying R250/month for Internet, and R559 for DSTV Premium, then your total budget for an "uncapped alternative" is not R559, it's R809.

Me, I have a 384 DSL line with an Afrihost 50GB @ R475 package (R9.50/GB), which is enough for both work and home Internet use AND entertainment. Also I get to watch what I want, when I want, with no ads, no re-runs, and no filler junk content. Sure it's slow but I just queue downloads to run overnight and it's all there for me the next day - what counts is that 50GB per month allows you to download more than is physically possible to really watch (1GB typically translates to roughly 2:45 hours of movie entertainment - I do not watch anywhere close to 3 hours of TV a day - so there's enough extra bandwidth for Greys etc. for the wife). And I can get old seasons of anything, and watch them in sequence. There are also no "timeout problems" with torrents (just be sure to install peerblock). This solution works well for me. You won't catch me near DSTV. Granted, I have no interest in sport.

And oh yes, my favorite shows, like Colbert or Daily Show, aren't even on our crappy DSTV.

PS on topic, I actually don't think these price increases are terribly unreasonable, since they're in line with the real rate of inflation. Installation is free including Dish+Bracket+LNB :)
