DStv recording (without a PVR) not allowed: MultiChoice

Nobody needed a copyright expert to tell us this..

Anything that comes out of MC's mouth in terms of what we can and can't do has no basis in law... only a basis in what makes them more money.

“One word of caution, however,” Schönwetter added. “This does not mean that users can develop work-arounds for their PVRs in order to store their movies [or other content] on a different medium.”

Why? I would like him to elaborate on this. Especially after this:

...television broadcasts in South Africa may be recorded and stored on any medium, so long as it is for private use.

If I am "time-shifting" and playing back content from my PVR while re-recording it on some other device (for whatever reason) if that second recording is still for personal use, what is the problem? What is a "work-arround"? Breaking some trivial encryption or modifying MY purchased device?

'PVR-ing' from the internet is just plain and simple hasstle free

Maybe the Ts and Cs read specifically along the lines of "you may not circumvent the content protection system of your PVR in order to access data stored on it blah blah." I.e. the Ts and Cs might tell you how you are allowed to use your PVR but not tell you in general whether you are allowed to do "time-shifting". If this is the case then I suppose that if you could find a way to time-shift your DStv content without breaking the PVR usage rules then you might be able to defend yourself in court.

The fact that protected content comes with a whole lot of draconian baggage dictating when and how the purchaser is allowed to consume it is going to bring about its demise, and those who put in the knives will feel not guilty but indignant and justified.

This is so annoying. If I can afford a pvr or a dstv subscription I can probably afford to hire a dvd and copy it or download stuff off the web. Such a waste of energy worrying about this especially in this country. Piracy in other countries is so widespread, we must be a drop in the ocean.

Is that why we don't get DVD recorders in South Africa? Monochoice will loose money selling their crappy PVRs!

We had one some time ago.
You still get them, but they're not really marketable anymore so Sony/Samsung, etc stopped producing them in bulk.

I had an LG HDD/DVD Recorder for a few years and DStv made my life hell. Their autotune reminder would sometimes not work at all and caused it to record the wrong channel. They had some form of macrovision or something going on the RCA out because the video would sometimes just go so bright and then black again (AGC protection I guess).

Eventually I got a PVR but after three months I was dissatisfied with how it worked and their pricing on the services. Seriously - they expect me to pay R65 every month just to record! Add to that I only had DStv Select so my subscription was less than double the PVR fee! Funny enough the minute that my DStv subscription was canceled I could no longer watch any of the recorded content.

That was it, I canceled DStv all together - sold my PVR. Now I just download what I want to watch and in general spend less time in front of the TV.

Multichoice, please go to hell.

Cool, so next thing Wimpy will be telling us its illegal for us to have take aways, we have to eat the burger right there in the restaurant, not later at our convenience! A DSTV subscriber pays for that show, they should be able to watch it as it pleases them, pvr or not.

Please tell me why?? Why can we not use work-arounds? the way i see it i purchased the PVR making it mine... so i can do whatever i want to it.. its no longer DSTV's property.

Ha, Mybb's headline is "DStv recording (non-PVR) not allowed:" but the article and experts do not say "illegal". They waffle about copyright, restrictions, what is deemed legal, and what is permitted. In no way do they say that the law explicitly does not allow it.
