DStv, TopTV ordered to change contracts

Just a question, and not to derail the thread but ...

South Africa's Consumer Act prohibits the bundling of services. The National Consumer Commission seems to regard the offering of TV channels together as a single product as tantamount to bundling services.

How is Telkom's voice service not a bundled service with regards to ADSL?

Just wondering ...

Telkom is a parastatal, the CPA doesn't affect them, also this won't end well at all, you think Multichoice is expensive now, if they are forced to unbundle channels we will end up paying more for less.

Out of interest - if a channel was R50.00 ... would you rather pay the R600.00 or choose 6 decent channels?

I think I'd go for 6 decent at R300.00

I like the way TopTV does it. Choosing genres.

As described in the article, letting a person choose individual channels would be bad overall. We already don't have Sy-Fy or SPACE.

Me too but I'd lile to see:

- Kids and Music split into two separate packages
- Fox FX moved to Entertainment where it belongs (it's NOT a movie channel!)
- not being forced to take Variety

Then I will only choose Entertianment/Knowledge & Music.

If they charged R50 for Supersport 1 then my overall subscription would be a grand total of R50 a month.:D That'd be awesome for me. I don't really worry about anything else. Entertainment is what a DVD player is made for.;)

Wait why would TopTV have to change their offering; isn't it already broken down it's packages by genre?

If i was ceo of multichoice i would just make ss1 R600 and Mnet R600 the rest can all be R1. That way people will still pay the full amount or double and I can still buy sport cars go on crazy international holidays and laugh at them while spying on them using state or the art satellite spying technology that they paid for.

But there is one major flaw:the names of their packages. It's frikken ridiculous.Imagine one night at a braai...
Some dude: Hey Biggie,so which toptv package do you have?
Biggie: I've got the variety + kids and music + knowledge and entertaintment package.

Seriously, why don't they just name it simple like basic, bronze, gold, platinum or even top1,top2,top3.

Interesting - Thanks for the heads up. We really need more competition for DSTV in the long run. Don't think TopTv will knock them too much.

Just it hasn't been done, doesn't mean it can't be - were would technology be with that ideology?

Unbundling - current income will probably go down - people choosing what they instead of the full package(s). But a lot more people who didn't have DSTV before would get it because the price barrier [-]would[/-] might be removed.

What they also can do is, give you discount the more channels you choose, in such a way the more popular channels can still pay for the less popular channels.

So
take 1 channel, pay R50/month for it.
Take 2 channels, pay R90/month for both.
Take 3 channels pay R130/month for all 3.
Take 4 channels pay R160/month for all 4.
ect...

The above prices are crazy expensive, BUT the idea counts. That way they lose less money and still get to do what they want, and see which channels are really useless and they can try and get rid off.

It is helpful to know what you got - not every one can remember (old ballies like me) what the contents is of a non-decribing name. :D
