DStv versus TopTV

Well I cancelled my TopTV end of December 2010 but still receive bi monthly invoices. I am not sure what they want from me. I am not paying those tw@ts another cent. I would rather pay R559 p/m for great SPORTS, Food Network etc than R249 for crap that's older than my eldest daughter but gets promoted as "NEW" on TopTV

We had no hassle cancelling recently. Maybe the issues with cancelling and billing have being rectified.

Also had no problem cancelling TopTV in Jan, went the DSTV HDPVR route, worth every cent.

Their legal department only sorted out my issues this week.

They will call you to remind you to make payment. After I cancelled I also received the invoices and just replied to each email that I cancelled and eventually they called me to enquire when I am going to make payment.

We do indeed read it, but many of the complaints are there because people don’t read the full article ;) If we include all the aspects asked for by only 5 people in this thread, the article will be around 5000 words long, with a table which contain over 200 fields – good for a University thesis, but less so for an online article.

Come now rpm, surely you must realize that a comparison of purely "number of channels" as given in the article is meaningless at best, and highly misleading at worst, when evaluating value for money. Seriously, ask yourself: what is the point of this article that's making a meaningless comparison? It's useless to a relatively informed reader, and terribly misleading to the less-informed.

As a quick exercise – please just reach consensus with the guys who complained above which channels are actually of value and which ones are fillers. Should be quick and easy ;)

You should not be depending on the posters to turn a meaningless article into a worthwhile thread.

As a recent example of how the quality of the articles here have take a turn for the worst, consider the article comparing "entry level" broadband. It happily took into account Telkom's line rental, iBurst's setup fee, but not CellC's or Vodacom's connection + sim fee in the calculation of "annual cost" (which would have roughly made about 10% increase in the latter two's prices). Maybe it was just an oversight, but in light of numerous other incomplete/useless articles that have been posted on mBB recently, I can't help but classify this "oversight" as either deliberate, or just plain shoddy work.

I'm sorry, I do not mean to be bashing your web site. However, I do hope that you will take my (and everyone else's) feedback on this issue seriously and return the site to its former glory.

You can actually stream sports games if you have a streaming account with a certain website, so 2meg uncappped ownz!?

Lots of series etc get streamed too, DSTV is a total utter ripoff, awful crap.

Apart from brining more channels to consumers, MultiChoice also innovated by brining mobile television to the local market at R36 per month.

You meant bringing right? Or is this a new word?

Anyway...DSTV is over priced...TopTV is like a glorified version of eTV...downloading movies / series is cheapest most convenient option...we all know this. Make your choice and move on.

It's been quite clear for a while now that most articles posted on mybb are pretty useless with regards to journalistic content. I'm pretty sure that 90% of articles get posted just to generate clicks.

Clearly, it's working, judging by the size of this thread. I wish MyBB would just allow commenting on the actual article page -- I don't need to enter a forum just to comment on how sloppily-written the article is.

In terms of the subject matter, I've had too much grief from Multichoice's mind-numbingly stupid call centre representatives and I've cancelled this whole DStv experiment. R 6 708 per annum to get treated that way? Nah, I'll stick to DVDs and the Internet, thank you very much. The bucks will make quite a welcome addition to my year-end vacation.

Top TV mentioned that their break even point would be in the region of 300 - 350k subscribers. I wonder how long it'll be before they reach that. Assuming that they only provisioned for content with investors money until they reach the break even point. Then we'll see some more time until the investors have profited, before the content will change. It remains a capitalistic approach with the consumer suffering boredom of re-runs.

It is really all about content. I downgraded to Select because I was sick of paying R600 for Sport I did not watch, movies I had seen on BluRay 6months prior, and constant screwups on the HD and VOD services. I got TopTV two months ago, and love the music channels and the retro TV, as well as MSNBC.

To say one is better than the other, or better value is completely subjective, and is certainly not answered with the numbers in the article. I am guessing everyone watches maybe 10 channels at most on either service.

I have to comment regarding the people that complain about everything on DSTV being repeated.. I don't have this problem but reasons for this may be that I have a job that keeps me occupied all day & weekends I spend away from the TV (not planned around what's on). So maybe I'd have the same complaints if I had more time?

We got TopTV in September never had any service issues with them, been enjoying the documentaries especially Discovery Science, Natura, TopExplore and TopHistory. Got it for my parents and they love watching FoxRetro and MGM. So I guess it depends on what content you prefer. I just felt since we don't watch sports, we might as well go with TopTV. DStv is just WAY TOO pricey. But if you want your sports I guess you'll have to pay them what they want.

So...the article is not really as interesting as I would have hoped but it seems to be more of a price VS price comparison.

So I had DSTV for about 7 or 8 years.
The beginning of last year I started realising that DSTV is lowering their DSTV decoder and installation prices but increasing their subsciber packages and increasing their HD Channel range...coincidence?

I am not a sport fan, aside from the Big Games, so I was generally watching only 3 or 4 channels of the entire Premium Bouquet.
After thinking about it for a long time and then making the commitment to give Top TV a go, we cancelled DSTV and paid R259 for decoder and installation. The guys were in on Monday (we bought on Saturday) installed it and after a brief phonecall, were connected to Top TV.

I am paying R219 for all the channels aside the children channels (no loss really) watching all the channels that I care to and have a great selection of music channels at R219 pm. R300+ less than DSTV.
DSTV Premium Bouquet is bloated with too many sport channels (do you really need 7+ Supersport channels) and too few channels with too many repeats.
The Select, compact etc. bouquest are structured in a way that you can not actually get the channels that you want.

DSTV is only has their loyal client base because of the number of years they have been on the market.

Till top tv can match dstv for their sport coverage I will stick dstv. I watch all the football and cricket on dstv and love the hd coverage, only complaint is the serie a coverage(rai's picture quality is poor). Their series coverage is also good enough for me but sport is the reason I have a satelite tv subscription.

I have had Toptv for about a week now and I'm really enjoying the music channels, especially Kerrang and Q, music channels on Toptv are miles better than DSTV.
