DStv versus TopTV

I got top tv just over 5 months ago. It was great for the first month when the stuff was new. I honestly have not seen a single new show since that time. You cant watch it most of the time because you have seen the show 3 times already.
Im very close to cancelling it.

It should be noted that DStv subscribers have benefitted from numerous new channels introduced over the last year, including a few new HD channels.

What? Like Sony MAX and a load of HD sport bull****? Pass.

Apart from brining more channels to consumers, MultiChoice also innovated by brining mobile television to the local market at R36 per month.

Yes, because in a world where people are buying huge TVs we really want to watch TV on a tiny mobile phone screen.

...and with a growing number of high definition (HD) channels it is unlikely that high-end subscribers will migrate to TopTV, which has no PVR solution, no HD channels and very limited sports coverage.

I'm betting a large amount of the 200 000 subscribers (by Jan) were DStv subscribers migrating. Plus, TopTV hasn't even been active for a year, give them time.

Comparing top tv to dstv based solely on number of channels and cost is like comparing telkoms offering to the rest of the worlds without taking mbps and cap into account.

I would like to know how many channels are fillers, and how many have the content of one channel, but split across 3 or 4. I think that would paint a completely different picture

Neither do the huge TV buyers want to see all of their content in SD and with no ability to record it to boot.

WRT the mobile market, the thousands of sport fans that now get to sloth off watching cricket/golf in the office would probably disagree with you.

Eish, I think TopTV would be doing better if they took the guide off the website. Or atleast only made it available to subscribers.

For a while now the quality of mBB articles have taken a serious nose-dive. Come on, mBB! Jack it up a little (or rather, a lot), will ya?

It's been quite clear for a while now that most articles posted on mybb are pretty useless with regards to journalistic content. I'm pretty sure that 90% of articles get posted just to generate clicks.

+1 totally agree. The article does not mention anything about HD channels which is becoming a big differentiator. Nor does it compare sports channels.. again Top TV has nothing in that department. There are so many other things that they could've compared in the article to really put it head to head, like customer service, decoder menu system, etc etc.

I wonder if they even bother reading the complaints in these forums because people have been nagging about it for a while now!

STAY AWAY FROM TOPTV!!

They are the worst customer service provider in this country imo.

I tried it when it came out last year, then when I tried to cancel the service after a month I couldn't. I have now called to cancel the service once every month, sent emails and even sent them letters through the mail to cancel the service!! And to this day the service is still active and my account with Top Tv is in arrears for R2800.

I recently received a letter of demand from TTV, I forwarded them all my cancellation emails and letters and my account has been credited and cancelled according to their legal team.

I am not the only one struggling like this with TTV. EVERYBODY that I know that tried to cancel their service have been struggling like this. Do yourself a favour don't sign up with them and avoid all the hassles of cancelling with TTV.

We do indeed read it, but many of the complaints are there because people don’t read the full article ;) If we include all the aspects asked for by only 5 people in this thread, the article will be around 5000 words long, with a table which contain over 200 fields – good for a University thesis, but less so for an online article.

As a quick exercise – please just reach consensus with the guys who complained above which channels are actually of value and which ones are fillers. Should be quick and easy ;)

Good to know about this - I've been toying with the idea of signing up with them for a while now, and it's comments like these that'll keep me away until I start reading / hearing about more positive reports concering their customer service, improved content etc.

There is absolutely no point to have any "lower" end package as the channels you get are shyte, So u either pay the full expensive price or rather watch SABC.. but as alot have said, there is not point to pay R500+ for tv channels. IT is cheaper to rent movies at home, And with all the repeating and repeating and did i mention repeating shows.. never mind the fact that they are out dated half the time.. Yet another horrible service in a monopoly in greed in South Africa. Who is surprised that we are a 3rd World country? i am not and we will never improve with the likes of these companies.

The R500 buys a lot of DVDs etc argument is only good if you only use your TV to watch movies. What about documentaries, reality shows and sports?

We had no hassle cancelling recently. Maybe the issues with cancelling and billing have being rectified.

wel in my point dstv is a wiast of time, unless u live for sports, if i had to take away channels that i never watch i'll be sitting with maybe 10-15 only, who realy watches that chinese news, and those stuff ? and horse racing and all those chanels that you just fly past, dstv should maybe do what top tv did and re-structure their offerings into better groups, cause i dont like paying for 30 channels i dont use.

BUt uncapped internet is the best option, download waht u wanna watch, no ad , no rubish

Satellite vs ADSL uncapped...

Hmmm, for R600 pm odd a better investment would be to upgrade your ADSL to a 4Mbps or faster uncapped service (if Telfail allow it).

I really agree this article is terrible, there is basically no information of value- everyone knows the pricing of the two, it has been in the media enough. Why not at least list the series, movies, talk shows and doccies that are prime time in the States and the UK that are aired on both. Now THAT would be more interesting. Then if the writer were a little more capable some research on the repeats in and out of prime time and on other channels could be added.

Seriously, a hour or two researching the main shows and checking them out on the American and UK rating sites would change this from drivel to a great and informative article.

Could we have a "kill" button for ****e articles MyBB?? If an article is too bad and you get say 500 "kills" the article is deleted forever- never to receive another hit again.

Also had no problem cancelling TopTV in Jan, went the DSTV HDPVR route, worth every cent.

Then TTV should make it public that they're aware people have had problems in the past, and they've rectified the situation - by not doing so, it 'prevents' potential subscribers from signing-up, as they're scared-off.
