DSTV XtraView details

Off topic, why oh why are all the home AV components in silver nowadays??

Is it possible to send the heartbeat over Wifi somehow? Or even better, IP (i.e. Internet, ADSL etc)

Second question, will it work with those (Ellies?) 2.4GHz RF transceivers (assuming you can get one not with RCA's but with the normal "RF aerial cable")?

TBH, I don't understand Multichoice....the way they do things seems so backwards!!

For example, you must have the "heartbeat"! What for? They will tell you piracy....

Two decoders, getting seperate satelite feeds. Both smart card numbers are connected to one subscription (+R55 access fee)....cool...no problem. Now they go and complicate things........surely you only need a software upgrade or firmware upgrade to "marry" the two decoders or "fuse" multiple decoders to one subscription.

Also the new HD-PVR will have one picture + two recording channels....what the f**k for? Why two recording channels? They had the PVR, with two viewing + 1 record....why not the same as the PVR.....? What the f**k do I want to record that is sooooo important considering how many times MC repeats their programming.

And finally, while I am infinitely happy that they introduced xtraview (something all of us thought of YEARS back)....it will only be active wth TWO decoders....who the f**k are their programmers and engineers....? I have never understood their stupidity....Why is MC employing IDIOTS?

So, I am the guy that rushed out and bought 2 1110 decoders (even though I had a perfectly good 993 decoder) and I'm waiting for the HD-PVR.....so now I'll have TWO redundant decoders......If I wanted to have a third TV in another bedroom, I can't use any decoder lying around because some MC idiot decided that their product will only work with TWO decoders...?

Really MC...R470/month is stiff money + R55 acccess fee makes R525 which is really stiff.....I'm just interested in the sport anyway which I think is absolutely super...but I still feel raped and exploited by them for the repeats and poor picture quality considering how expensive the subscription is....nevermind the equipment/installation costs....

Oh yes....and why MUST we buy their decoder? I've seen other decoders that do a much better job that the MC STB (which is junk anyway)...now with the new HD decoder we all have to pay for Neels van Schalkwyk (the middle man) who "supplys" MC with these decoders....CUT OUT the middleman!!!

I want some other brand, with beter connectors, better scalers, better sound and picture chips, etc......honestly....

or even better, a PCI card or USB jobbie with 2 tuners that can do everything for us MCE people. no need for a bulky decoder then.

someone needs to build an RF cable signal converter to get around their decoder sharing restriction. Which means instantly your DSTV cost goes from R470 to (R470+R55)/2=R263 - I can do with a R207 discount. Same difference as running an RF cable to the neighbour.

Don't be so aggressive, you sound like a fool.

The hearbeat is there to stop me giving one of my mates the second decoder. I installed for MC about three years ago and people were already asking if we could split a dual view signal between them and their neighbour  And the reason for the two decoder limitation is not because of bad software, you can blame that one on the bean counters at MC :(

Probably yes - and there must be a lot of people working on that right now :D

However, i doubt this "heartbeat" will be purly RF in nature - there's something special about those RF ports hence only works on newer decoders.

I would imagine they will be putting a power or low voltage on the cable which will be a lot harder to emulate over ip.

.

For myself I have more benefit for two recordings and one view, record sport and my wife records Oprah. The heartbeat function does not make allot of sense though.

All in all I am actually excited about the new HD PVR and can't wait for mine to be installed hopefully before this weekend!

How much was your HD-PVR, I didnt know they were available yet?

What a load of bollocks, This is just a pre-empt to eliminating dual-view completely because their new HD decoder doesnt support this function. Useless scum of the earth - they are becoming the next Telkom IMO!

Of course, so you and your neighbour can't share a subscription. Notice the new Terms & Conditions on DSTV that specify the same building only.

I prefer the idea of 2 recording channels but why can't it just be 3 channels, use as you like?!

That idiot most likely was the embedded software engineers that couldn't make the "heartbeat" work between more than one decoder.

I've played with Verizon FiOS and I have to say, their system really rocks. They have HD-PVR, HD and SD models and they all are connected in the house. Each TV has its own decoder and they can all access content from the PVR(s) in the house. Only problem when I played with it was that the SD decoder couldn't watch the HD content stored on the HD-PVR but they are apparently going to be doing some down-scaling from HD to SD in future versions of the software.

C'mon MultiChoice, I challenge you, make South Africa proud, show us that you aren't just a bunch of accountants but real engineers.

Can I share my DSTV with the neighbour in the same complex and hence same building :p

So then the building clause falls away cause I'm not in a building ... I'm in a property :p
