DStv's one device streaming limit kicks in

DSTV thinks they are leaving money on the table. I think there is a major flaw in their logic here which is that each password “hanger-on” is a potential customer that they are not extracting revenue from. Their expectation is that having been cut off from free DSTV that these folks will quickly become subscribers. I think this belief is flawed - if people could afford the monthly fee and saw value in it they would already be subscribers. Since the cost/ value proposition is likely the main barrier preventing these people from already being subscribers they will simply look elsewhere.
So instead of gaining new subscribers like they think they are going to all this will serve to do is annoy their actual customers who have had their options clipped and their value eroded significantly.

Class action anyone?

I have no skin in the game but it’s an interesting idea. SA does not seem to have a culture of this - perhaps it’s why so many companies seem to see their own T’s&C’s as the be all and end all. They are rarely challenged.

Class action anyone?

Much easier to cancel subscription and move on.

It will be interesting to see if Dstv will publish the subscription stats over the next few months and see that Customers have left the platform, Or spin Numbers to make their decision look justified.
Since when do they spin the numbers? I didn't hear anyone complaining about spinning the numbers when they reported the loss of premium subscribers, it seems you are preparing in advance to reject the numbers if you don't like them.

The people who are going to be hit the most with this is those who were using others credentials and those are not subscribers, I don't see any major impact on their subscriber base out this, yes some few people will cancel and they will gain other customers. Their premium base will continue to shrink as it has for the past few years.

If only there was some sort of portable 'magical device' from DSTV that would allow you to carry it around, enabling you to watch DSTV ANYWHERE in dedicated urban areas..

OH WAIT - THERE WAS! - between 2010 & 2017, until it was withdrawn by Monochoice in favour of going over to an internet-based 'streaming service' - and just look how that's subsequently turned out to the detriment of DSTV subscribers!

(DStv Mobile coverage was available in the nine major cities of South Africa: Johannesburg, Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Rustenburg, Mbombela, Polokwane, Port Elizabeth and Durban.)

Packages available with the Drifta / Walka:
  • e.mobile (free)
  • DStv Mobile @ R 49-00 per month (standalone subscription - excluding M-Net Mobile)
  • DStv Mobile for Premium subscribers (this includes the M-Net Mobile channel) - Premium subs get one subscription on any DStv Mobile compatible device at no extra cost

DStv Mobile recently launched their new Drifta USB mobile TV decoder, complementing its current range of mobile TV phones and its standard Drifta modem.

Like its predecessor the new DStv Drifta USB mobile TV decoder receives a DVB-H signal from MultiChoice’s mobile TV network and is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7.

“It’s just a matter of loading the Drifta USB application onto your PC,” explains Mark Rayner, general manager: DStv Mobile South Africa.

“After that, you simply plug the Drifta USB into your PC and launch the application; within seconds you can then enjoy DStv Mobile content.”

“The Drifta USB has been launched to address the needs of customers who primarily want to use their PCs and laptops for viewing."

"Based on the positive response we received from the Drifta, we wanted to come up with something more affordable and exclusive to devices with USB ports.”

The Drifta USB retails at R399.00 and is available at MultiChoice branches and select retailers.

REVIEW. DStv Mobile's Walka 7 is a great handheld 'travel version' of DStv; men, kids and frequent travellers will love this TV tablet.

So, from being able to carry around a wide variety of DSTV Mobile devices (as detailed above) from 2010 - with the option of linking ONE device for free to your existing DSTV Premium account - and paying an additional subscription of R 49 for any additional devices you may have had, Monochoice discontinued this service when they switched over to their internet streaming service' during 2017.

This INITIALLY allowed the choice of FIVE separate linked users per DSTV Premium subscription being able to steam live broadcasts separately - as per their launch promo TV advert (19 April 2017)

This capability was then incrementally whittled down over the ensuing years, to where we currently stand - as from 22 March 2022 - with only ONE linked user now capable of streaming any LIVE content - and limiting the single other remaining linked user to only being able to watch previously downloaded content on a mobile device - as there is NO DSTV Now (or Showmax) desktop app available to download content using a Windows or Mac PC or laptop , and then watch it there - which you CAN do using the Netflix desktop app.

And this is what they call 'progress'... as per their press release:

We will not limit the number of people using a login, however, we are limiting the number of people who can stream at the same time,” MultiChoice explained.

“Password sharing and piracy are challenges for streaming providers globally,” it stated.

As part of our ongoing efforts to counteract password sharing and piracy, while continuing to bring you the best viewing experience, we will be introducing measures to limit concurrent streaming.”

I've already canceled my subscription with them after supporting them since the late 90's. They will regret trying to be dominant in a market where one has free choices with other TV providers. Let's see how long they can last...

This decision will ultimately result in more piracy as those cut off from password sharing now turn to (illegal?) IPTV services.
MC might think they'll score extra subscriptions from this move, but the game has moved on.
There's simply too many alternatives. Password sharing is often sited by MC for dwindling revenue, but they'll soon realize that they need to look internally for their failings.
Still waiting for that FLEX PACKAGE, BTW MULTICHOICE.
So let's get this right, MC actually thinks that those using a premium subscribers login details, will now lead to them signing up for a DSTV account? If that is the case, why did those individuals not just sign up in the first place?

MC can do whatever they want, fact is that this will not change anything, except possibly see them lose subscribers, who will feel that MC has breached contract. Which they did btw

The problem is where do you watch sport?

Go to the pub and support a business that supports DSTV.
Watch IPTV and support pirate IPTV providers that are the reason why DSTV implemented the limit.

There is no way around DSTV premium if you like to watch Rugby, Cricket, F1 etc. You just complain and complain but when DSTV debits your account you pay.
