K well Ive looked around on the net a bit for installing dual monitors but I still got a couple questions.

-Do you have to re-install your graphics drivers when you connect two monitors? (the one site said so, but why?)

-And why when I plug my second monitor does it not get any signal?

Thanks

I've not had to re-install drivers for that. I have a nvidia card, maybe with ATI but probably not.

Just plug in the screen, and look through the settings utility for your card and find the dual monitors options, you just need to change a setting to get it to come on. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

You may need to restart the pc with the two screens plugged in, with my nvidia card I can only enable a certain dual screen mode can't remember the name) that way, which is better, otherwise I can only have horizontal or vertical spanning.

PC needs to be off/restarted when plugging a second monitor in so it can detect the extra monitor. Normally it would automatically clone the display as default till configured otherwise

1) Plug in the second monitor (PC can be on or off)
2) Control Panel
3) Display
4) Settings
5) Click on the second monitor
6) Select "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this Monitor"
7) Pick a good matching resolution

Voila...

Then read here...

+1. Some people talk a bunch of complete and utter crap.
Monitors are plug 'n play, then just configure them in the monitor-control panel. Nothing else is required, except if it's Linux.

There is something called Help in the majority of Microsoft Products. Searching XP's help on getting dual monitors to work proved very useful, even explaining how to adjust for monitor staggering.

I have found extensively that when XP boots with only one monitor plugged in, and you plug in another, it takes a reboot for display properties to recognise the second monitor. All been on nVidia cards.

I can connect my second monitor on DVI without restarting, but when connecting a DSUB (15pin connector) device, I need to do a restart for dual display functionality (9600GT on Vista 64bit).

Thanks for all the replies, I still have yet to try (cant learn all my science in three hours ><)

I do have a few questions though, when I play COD4 for example, will the game be spanned over 2 monitors or 1?
and if its on one will I have to alt tab to quickly change something on the other?

And secondly I use windows live messenger, and whenever a new convo starts up it starts on taskbar on the left, is there a way to move this to the right, so that i can see when someone contacts me?

Thanks

Games run on the Primary Monitor if using a seperated screen display setting. Spanned desktop would have the game running both screens and clone would duplicate the game to both :P

Taskbar and applications can be moved independantly between monitors

Didn't I cover the steps in the FAQ?

Techie! I think we are doomed to cut and paste answers over and over again. People just don't read help sections or stickied threads which are right in front of them :( It's easier for them just to ask anew and we bring the answers to them than for them to go searching for it.

Lazy bums!
