OK...so I have some duplicates floating around. Can anybody suggest a free app/program to scan and remove these clones?

Look for an app called noclone, it's shareware I think ;)

There are lots of mac scripts and programs to do this. But for Windows, +1 to what the others said.

If these duplicates have the same file name or file size why not just use the Find Utility and then just sort by name or file size? Then just select your extras and delete them that way. If the files have different file sizes (and its more than just the included ID tags) then I don't think a program will be able to tell they are the same song, after all
there is no way a program will know that a live concert recording of a song is
the same as a studio recording.

That's why I recommend iTunes, you can preview tracks if you are unsure that they are different, it's what I use and really have not come across an alternative that does it better.

You obviously have to add your entire music collection if you have not used iTunes before which does suck.

Good news For your Go this site and Delete Your all duplicate files, image, mp3, videos etc.

Thread necro of note there buddy :erm:

Oh wait, you are not perhaps promoting something?

Ah - I did not see a RAS so I did and posted as such. If you RAS, you should indicate so that we don't duplicate RAS - like duplicate MP3s, which this stupid thing is about.

I RAS at times. I decide not to RAS if the link looks suspicious, so the thread can be buried, I guess I'm over analyzing the mods here, oh well.

Because a simple comparison like that is not always effective. The best way to do this is to actually compare file contents via something like md5sum. This way you will get proper matches irrespective of file names etc.
