Caspa - the word that comes to mind is that one that is used in wireless most often. "Depends" 1 - 1.5km you could have some luck depending on what is around and in the way. Just give it a try. maybe you can hook up with someone that has equipment you can test with before oyu go out and buy.

I ordered my USB wireless thingy today.. gonne do it cheap, not gonna fork out the cash until i got some1 to connect with in this town.. just wanna play around with it.. i even extended my usb cable with UTP cable to make it longer. my next step it so make one of these http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/ dunno how good they are. but gonna try. Any1 know how long i can make that usb cable or any other solutions to getting the usb device on the roof on a nice high pole? i extended it 5m and it still works fine.. but ultimatly i would like it on a nice high pole on the roof. above all the trees.. anywho.. now u heard my story.

It looks like the link works fine
Spanky - let us know how it turns out. The guys fom Durbs are also keen for easy "poor man" solutions

We have a couple of people in dwc giving home brew antennas a go. The nice look about this one is the fact that it is usb and with usb you can extend the cable quite a way and it's far cheaper then the LMR cable.

its like R4500 for a VANS licence, why dont everyone in SA that wants wireless kick in R20 and we can have a legal wireless network, or am i miss interpreting something by thinking that VANS providers have access to the 2.4 ghz spectrum...

Anyone can use 2.4Ghz
No-one but Telkom, SNO, MTN, Cell C, Vodacom, WBS and Sentech are allowed to communicate over a property boundary.
And even then, they're not allowed to use 2.4Ghz to do it.

2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz are open for use on your own property (eg: at home, your office, in a car). But not between properties, even if you're licensed to do it with a cable.

daffy , daffy you perplex me. Do you have some sort of agenda?
Is somebody paying you to distort the truth? Are you a secret undercover agent for Icasa? Point number one is that the law does not say you are not allowed to have your data cross property bounderies. This is Icasa's interpretation of the law.
The Telecoms lawyers have a different interpretation.
No judge has made a ruling and since the police will not enforce either Telcoms Bill or Convergence Bill because legal equipment is used, this whole issue is purely academic.
They will only arrest you if you hang Andries Matthysen with a Fiber Optic cable.
See http://icasa.blogspot.com and do attempt to provide some sort of rational
factual rebuttal if you disagree with me,instead of restating Andries Matthysen chief Anit-Wi-fi induna at Icasa's interpretation.

I was looking around at that site Spanky posted, and this particular picture intrigues me: http://www.usbwifi.orcon.net.nz/lazywifi.jpg
It seems that our hilly problem in durban is solved :) :)

Im assuming that both parties adjust their antenna according to the angles, a gain of 12dB could be attained if both are pointed at 45º from the horizon. So without LOS a distance of maybe 2km could be made yes?

I so wanna try this!
So all one needs is a USB cable, the wifi USB dongle and that chinese cookery dish? (or anything alternatively :p)

I see rectron are selling the wifi USB for R340
Any contenders? :)

(a) A private telecommunication network shall not be provided by means of telecommunication facilities other than facilities made available by Telkom or any other person providing a public switched telecommunication network service as contemplated in section 46(1), except as provided in paragraph (b).
(b) The provisions of paragraph (a) shall not apply in respect of—

(i) a private telecommunication network provided by means of a telecommunication system situated on a single piece of land or contiguous pieces of land owned by the same person; or
(ii) any private telecommunication network maintained by Transnet or Eskom.
---

I'm not going to start a debate here, but I believe its pretty obvious what this means.
Considering that only Telkom and the SNO are PSTN's, this leaves PTN to everyone else (with a PTN and VANS license).

I find it quite comical that a few months ago, you were waving some facts around about how MegaWan took ICASA to court, and won and what it meant, and now you wont listen to someone who was there to see it all happen.

captainwifi - i ready don't think daffy is against wifi over boundaries he's just stateing the law.... and yes law can be interperted in many ways hence long legal battles

as daffy says i don't think we should start a debate hear.

when it comes to this part of the law it is very grey

Linking the mesh.

Just throwing in my 2 cents.

But would'nt it be possible to connect the mesh together via those in the mesh that have ADSL via bridging/routing the network interfaces.
IE WLAN on one end and ADSL on the other ...etc.

Just an idea ?

mySAP - not a bad idea. we have thought of this and may use it until we can like parts of the mesh together via wifi

the thing that we trying to achieve it faster speeds then ADSL within the mesh.

are you from Durban?

For those interested I have started a google email group for Wi-Fi people in durban to communicate via email (sometimes one misses posts on forums)

http://groups.google.co.za/group/durbanwireless
or email "list at dwc dot za.net" and i will add your email address to the list.

and you dont have to be from durban to join the list. It can be used by anyone wanting to ask general wireless questions or answer them
