Durban

I have been on holiday in Durban for a week using Saratoga(La Lucia Mall 126)tower - I don't know how the Durban users put up with the totally unacceptable performance! 9Mb file (from sourceforge.net)just took 40 minutes - the best speed I've had all week. I complain about being throttled to 64k international bandwidth in Jhb but its seems that here you can only dream of "HIGH SPEEDS" like that!
I have demonstrated the modem to two customers and no doubt they will tell all what crap performance they saw.
 
Keithr, we don't put up with it:
Many of us simply don't pay any more..... and
many more have simply canceled and returned their modems.
On any given day of the week, a 28.8k modem will outperform
MyWireless in the Durban area. Yes... and I'm not even talking
about international access here!!!
Until about July Durban had it's own dedicated allotment of bandwidth,
and then Sentech Marketing got involved. I rest my case.

Edit: Razer0, I can't even get a 1/5 of that.... and thats to IS's Tucows?

Funny enough for the majority of last night i was getting a strong 26k average so today i havnt really tested but speeds have been up to 20k (these all international). I know Rhino has been getting roughly the same, anyone else experiencing this?
 
dbnnet its bit torrent which i assume is international, and emule which i know is int..
right now im getting ave speeds of 27kb but ive noticed something. For bittorrent it goes up to 25kb speeds but DAP and emule never go more than 12 so IMO i think sentech have put a cap on certain ports (i reckon this is their new 'bandwidth management system')

Those living in the Kloof area will be interested to hear that Telkom's
launch of their WiMax Network (802.16 - In partnership with Intel)
will be happening in their area before anywhere else. Two sites
in Pretoria as well the Kloof site in KZN have been selected for
the first installations.

guess where all the telkom execs stay ...

yip you guessed it in the placess ADSL was first rolled out ... and those dumb ****s were using it uncapped and sucked all the pr0n of the net [me thinks should inform cops sizwe is into kidddies :)] ah well us mere mortals have to take it up the rectum ... i can barely afford the KY with the price of telkoms ...
 
Before everyone bails from here, I'm looking at tryin to put together a WiFi noded network - JAWUG style. If anyone in Durbs is keen, let me know here or via email [:)]

The idea is to start with a closed network for gamin and file exchange, and maybe add net access later [;)]

Err is this just for a certain area or all of durban? Im keen for gaming, oh and Big Boobs Vol.4 that im sure Rhino has in his hidden folders..

Create an account and then plot your location on the map - you'll see me on the Bluff area [:)]
You have to give GPS co-ords when plotting yourself - you can use the Sentech "Check if u r zoned" map, the GPS co-ords follow your mouse on the bottom of the screen.

The more ppl we can plot as "waiting for activity" the better. Once someone is within range - say 3km with a bit of LOS - then you can link up with them. And so the chain will grow [:)]

Rhino, u are quite a ways away from me (8+ km). The key is start building a small wifi network with in your area and then as the networks start to overlap, we start bridging into each other.
I'm gonna see if I can get some mates on the Bluff together to form a small network around the Bluff. From there we can hopefuly start bridging into the Umbilo/Glenwood area. Maybe we will be able to link up through a Glenwood node [:&gt;]
