E-tolling another arms deal?

Of course it is..

It was done to enrich a few people... only problem is the public is standing up and saying F You in no uncertain terms.

I would love to see a public inquiry into this... only problem is all the money that we are wasting having to investigate everything that the cANCer government touches.

“Through this centralised funding process in 2009/10, R29 billion was allocated towards national, provincial and local roads infrastructure projects. This was possible despite the fact that only R22 billion was collected nationally through the fuel levy in that year.,” said SANRAL.

“Had a dedicated fuel tax been used for roads instead, there would have been a shortfall of R7 billion in the money available for roads infrastructure projects.”

BULL FARKIN SHOOT: Nobody said ONLY fuel levies etc should be used to fund roads infrastructure. Additional funding ripped from taxpysers should also be used.

Exactly - Arms Deal II.

Only difference is the president through Shaik isn't a direct beneficiary this time around.

Spin it whichever way you want SANRAL, the reply from us will always be

GO **** YOURSELVES !!!!

i suppose, to get the same income out of the fuel price, as with tolling, gov would need to hike up the fuel price way too much for my liking... especially if i dont use the toll roads.... then i'd rather pay a toll fee as and when i do use the toll road.
which I guess is the "logic" behind toll fees.
BUT... if government would rather use the already high taxes we pay wiser, they could get much better allocation of funds.
e.g. I simply WILL NOT accept that ministers NEED a million rand luxury car... TWO of each nogal.... and then the SOBs are still unhappy about it! Then we're not even talking about all the other outrageous 'benefits' they get.
Cut the corruption, cut the wastage, get capable management in place, and there will be enough munny to go around

So what happens to the money derived from yearly licence fees? I thought that is to maintain our roads. The levy that's raised in say
Natal is it used in Natal only, or is it going in to a central fund? I don't think the ANC is using it for the roads, as we have very, very
"holy" roads. pieterj

On the question of wasting law enforcement resources on the collection of toll fees, SANRAL said that the enforcement of toll offences will decrease as toll compliance increases. “The Police and Metro Police will not be tasked with this functionality,” said SANRAL.

Like that's going to happen. Cluster **** of note

There is massive fraud and wastage here. It's as plain as day. The feasibility study for the toll roads alone cost R2bn and the rest of the system will cost R15bn to operate for three years. This means every toll gantry works out to a few hundred million rand!! I would like to know how some steel poles over the highway with RFID sensors and a computerised billing system can add up to R15bn, that's Billion (with a B) a.k.a. R15 000 000 000. Are the gantries made from platinum? Did they have to launch a dedicated satellite? Did they hire Bill Gates to run the system???

"It also confirmed that SANRAL does not generate a profit through its toll portfolio"

Hrm. I'd like to know more about this aspect. Does SANRAL really not make any profit off the venture? What's with all the stories about backing by foreign investors, and shareholders? If there's really no profit, would SANRAL even have undertaken a project such as this?

Something fishy going on here.

It is just so sad that us South Africans get shafted every day and in every way and no matter how much we complain nothing every gets done about it. Makes emigrating look so much more attractive. :(

What's even more sad is that these Sanral clowns actually work (or are supposed to) for us. We as taxpayers pay their salaries ffs, and they go and decide on a system where 1/3 or every rand collected goes to waste. Why does government think we not have a say in this?

Not only should we boycott the tolls, we should burn Sanral at the stake!

E-tolling is double charging.

You are paying the e-toll and you are still burning the petrol with road taxes.

The theory that the roads are higher maintenance and therefore have a higher cost is also counter-acted by the fact that these roads also have higher traffic and therefore generate more revenue in burnt fuel.

All this is achieving is a simple higher amount of pocket money for an official somewhere.

“Through this centralised funding process in 2009/10, R29 billion was allocated towards national, provincial and local roads infrastructure projects. This was possible despite the fact that only R22 billion was collected nationally through the fuel levy in that year.,” said SANRAL.

Bullschit. SANRAL already structured a ring-fencing proposal. Although it is a bad precedent imo, it was on the cards. Don't try to obfuscate with nonsense - you could at least try harder than that, SANRAL...

SANRAL said that the enforcement of toll offences will decrease as toll compliance increases.

Captain DipSchit to the rescue. Thanks for explaining that piece of logic to us minions. You'd swear a politician had prepped your answers...

Plus .. not giving a currupt easy government access to the funds in my bank account scores very high on the do-not-get-an-e-tag list!
