E-tolls get a start date

Just in time for them bonuses for government...

In all seriousness, I would love to see how this is going to play out. with over 1.4 million tags still unsold and only 600k spoken for. So far it look like people are really resisting which is the only way to deal with it.

I'm sure they will try and make examples out of a few high profile resistors, but they cannot possibly lock up the entire GP.

OK, so now I need a GPS that can handle an obstruction in one direction of a highway, and will route around that.

None of my Garmins can do that, and the TomToms that I have seen cannot either.

If you have a smartphone with google maps on it, then there is an option to avoid tolls and highways...

Tom Toms will route around tolls, but I'm not sure if it will route around that part or just avoid the highway. Though you can do a manual alternate destination when approaching it. A bit of PT but I think that might be the best you'll get.
I actually don't think GPS software is designed like that. I'll submit a feature request on the forum though. They seem pretty good about these kinds of things.

There again, it routes around the whole thing. Though you can drag the route to customise it. Again, not a terribly easy approach.

The TomToms can't do this.

It is actually not an unusual issue, what if you have an accident on a highway, and the lanes in one direction are blocked ? Or washed away, or whatever.

They were just lazy when they did the maps, the two directions of a highway should be different roads (eg M1N and M1S).

Anyway, I will buy the first GPS on the market that allows me to enter the Toll Gates as obstructions, in only the appropriate direction.

Agreed, that doesn't work.

Now, if Google had an option to avoid Toll Gates, now that would be different, and very useful.

For example, I can travel to ORT without passing through a Toll Gate, but on the way back I have to pass through one. I want the GPS to take me to ORT on the highway, and to automatically change the route on the way back to avoid the Toll Gate.

The "Avoid Toll Roads" option just doesn't do it.

I don't want to avoid the roads, I just want to avoid the eToll Gates.

This may force them to put more eToll Gates in, the cost of which will make the system implode.

I have a Tom Tom, and it does have an avoid Tolls option. Along with fastest route etc. Mine does also have individual roads for each side. I do stand under correction that it's not part of the normal route type selection. It's under planning settings. You can tell it to always avoid or ask everytime. But it's there. I think it includes ferries strangely enough.
Even my old Garmin Nuvi could avoid tolls.
When reporting something like a speed limit change or road closure you specify a side of the road.

Everyone is "going to jail", just like we are for not paying speeding fines, its a joke!

Im surprised to hear people willing to torture their GPS and waste time to avoid these things, is it going to make you sleep better?

You didn't read what I said. I have a few Garmins, none of them can do this, and I looked at a friends new TomTom (a fancy model) the other day, it also cannot do this.

Try to put an obstruction with specific coordinates in one direction of the N1 between Pretoria and Joburg and get back to me. This obstruction can not affect the routing in the other direction.

Just checked and you can drag a route on Maps desktop but you can't seem to do it on the app. I may be wrong there, but I can't find a way.

So it looks like it's avoid it all or go through.

Yeeeah .. finally!
Been waiting months now to see what'll come of this fiasco.
The sooner it starts the sooner it can end.... and if it doesn't and people start to pay up at least I'll know what to make of my fellow South African citizens, from the poorest of the poor who keep mindlessly voting in the face of failure to the spineless middle/higher class twat on the highway with his domtag in the window.
Time to see if we can walk the talk.

"If the ANC does to you what the Apartheid government did to you, then you must do to the ANC what you did to the Apartheid government." - Nelson Mandela

Been hearing a lot of the poorer people referring to that quote when asked how they feel about this.

The ANC's days in Gauteng are hopefully numbered.

While the DA is in charge of the Western Cape, there will be NO etolls in the province.

Haha, thats cute buddy. have you not seen how the rambo government is just doing as it pleases. Nothing we can do about it. We can only bend over and take it.

As long as idiots keep voting them into power, they will continue doing as they please.

Ok, I don't have my Tom Tom with me right now so I am happy to admit I might be mistaken. But you can do it on the mapshare reporter site, and it honour sides.
Though the map reporting system on the devices is an issue they're trying to make more user friendly. for now I just make changes online and they sync up when you update as long as you have your device correctly set.
AFAIK, Tom Tom's have the toll roads already included in the maps and will avoid but as I said, it's the entire route.
