E1820 External Antenna Connector

My 8ta E367, CellC sim, no external antenna, connects at 28.8 Mbps, at first I thought it was 28.8 Kbps! Haven't done any speed tests yet.

This is a Windoze message based on capabilities of the modem, not a negotiated speed. Actual speed is negotiated during tranfering of data. When idle, it defaults to 3G.
 
Cell-C SIM in E1820 with firmware 11.865.07.00.618 forced to 2100MHz Only - nothing
I've just tried this again and was able to register on the Cell-C network and establish a connection with the modem forced to 2100MHz only.

Edit: I was able to register on 43174 without an antenna. I was not able to test registering on 40544 as I currently have no way of attaching my antenna to my modem suitable for 2100MHz.

I went on a mission to find the MIMO firmware for the E1820, in the hopes that such a firmware might display the signal strength from the external antenna connector. I found version 11.865.07.00.618 for the E182E. I succesfully flashed it onto my E1820, and it reports the new firmware version although the model ID has remained E1820. According to Windows, the modem now "connects" at 28.8Mbps instead of 21.6Mbps.

Unfortunately the signal strength on the external connector is still not reported. :(

Take note: because this firmware version does not end in .00, I will probably require a Flash Code in order to revert to the stock Cell-C firmware.

i've flashed my e182e with the firmware from above. My provider is "A1" from Austria. After the update, will I now be able to use an external antenna, because my modem will be used in a room with bad signal connected to a wlan router.

The new firmware does not make any difference to how the external antenna connector works on the E1820. So I suspect the same applies to the E182e.

My results here show in improvement when using the 11.865.07.00.618 firmware on an E1820 in the case where the modem's internal antenna and the antenna on the external antenna "see" different towers.
 
Ok, and when the antennas see the same cells there will be no improvement, right?
Is a cell id bind to one tower, or can two towers have the same id? I have 3 different towers with umts, all of them within the range of vision...

When the antennae see the same cell there is an improvement even with the older, non-MIMO firmware. See my results here.

As far as I know, two towers can not have the same Cell ID. One tower can have multiple Cell IDs though, for example 40541, 40542 and 40453 are three different sectors on tower 4054. All the network operators in South Africa use the last digit of the Cell ID for the sectors, but I understand not all operators around the world do it this way.
I have seen some, but not all, network operators use the same Cell ID for 2G and 3G cells.

Like ginggs said, Cell ID can not be across different towers.
As each tower has its on unique ID.
Like ginggs example. eg

Tower A= 4053
Will have sector dishes on it.
Sector one = 40541
Sector two = 40542
Sector Three=40543

As the 1, 2 and 3 are for the 900mz Towers.
If you use MDMA it picks up the tower it is connected to, with help to identify which you are connected to.
If want to set up a Pointing Antenna , PM me all assist in direction to point it in.
Just can give exact location.

I did some speedtests with a Huawei E1820, firmware version 11.865.07.00.618, on Vodacom's 2100MHz this weekend, full results here.

Ignoring the spurious download tests that slowed to a crawl and the ping tests that were over 1000ms, I got the following results from the most consistent speedtest server (Midrand Neology):

Vodacom's 2100MHz tower is approximately half the distance (600m) from me as the Cell-C 900/2100MHz tower used in previous tests.

I conclude the following:
  1. Huawei E1820 firmware 11.865.07.00.618 is capable of attaching to a 2100MHz network
  2. The "diversity" receiver on the E1820 does operate at 2100MHz
  3. If one is close enough to a tower, an inductive coupler results in a negligible improvement in throughput
  4. If one is close enough to a tower, the E1820's external antenna connector improves throughput

More importantly I've come to the very simple conclusion that ALL later model Huawei 3G usb modems with:

  1. two internal diversity receive antennas
  2. external antenna interface (CRC-9)

that the

  1. the external antenna interface is switched
  2. the external antenna interface connects only to the second diversity receiver

ie like the E1820 and K4505 and are of no use in an area with only external antenna reception?

Am I right or wrong?

Vodacom 4605 which is a Huawei E372 is currently the top available.
Huawei E367 probably 2nd spot

The E353 is available here, for service on the Optus Network (900/2100); which is slowly deploying HSPA+.

Is this modem family K4605/ E372/ E353 (are they the same family?), positively confirmed to support an external antenna, which will both transmit and receive ie work in an 'external antenna only area'.

considered the testimony of the users on the forum, the new Internet keys properly support an external antenna. Very probably the K4510 and K4511 being of type 3i (thanks sajunky) as the K4605 (thanks ginggs) should work fine with an external antenna. Some information?

These are new modems, you can expect updated chipsets and no need for 'workaround' solutions. But confirmation is welcome.

In theory then K4510 / 1 should work with the external antenna. Sorry, but precisely with solutions "workaround" to which models are you referring? for example, from E1820/E/3 below are not already occurred several updates chipset?
 
I wonder if some one would be so kind as to help me with a quick question please. I currently own a E367 and a E1820, I have no 3G signal inside my house, if I take either of the modems outside then I can pick up a good signal. I used to run the E1820 first and that required me to put it on top of the roof attached to a external aerial (it improved my signal 73dbi). I then changed from the E1820 to the E367 and discovered I did not need to place the E367 outside on the roof which was great. So currently I have the modem in my room with the aerial cable running on to the roof.

Now my question is this :)

Does the K4605 aerial attachment work the same way as the E1820 or the E367 ? Or should I more correctly ask, will the modem need to be placed back on to the roof if I upgrade to the K4605 ? ;)
