According to our current road traffic act, if you are charging someone to drive with you, you are required to have a Professional driving permit (PrDP), otherwise, if you are an accident, you will be held liable and be prosecuted. Also, your insurance won't pay out either as you were "running a taxi service"

Those roads are currently in good condition because the majority of the traffic is currently on the highway. Shift the highway traffic onto those roads and you will get a major problem. I don't know if its law to restrict cargo trucks from using those roads, such as main roads within suburbs, etc, but if cargo container trucks are allowed onto those roads, imagine what will happen if one of those breaks down in peak traffic. Maybe make it two or three. Probably not total anarchy, but pretty close.

To make it even worse, say you coming down towards JHB on the N1 South and you get off at Samrand you don't pay anything since the last toll gantry, 1.5km further is Olifantsfontein and if you want to use that you have to go through a gantry over the N1S and thus it suddenly would cost you more... The system is inherently flawed and unfair.

R55 from N14 to kyalami is certainly certainly not in a good condition. Level road in midrand certainly not in a good condition. Old pretoria/jhb road certainly not in a good condition.
So if I pick up a work colleague and we share the costs (ie petrol) - does that mean I have to have a PrDP? Or is it only applicable to 4 or more persons?
good thing i don't drive around in a cargo truck LOL but yes - and i can bet this will happen AND it may cause this Toll system to be re-evaluated because big business will contest the costs of using the tolled roads and again if they decide to not use the tolled roads and not allowed to use the secondary roads we are in for secondary problems
which will have a negative impact on life in GAU as we know it. Time will tell.Then again - there are still many trucks using secondary roads. Easyaccess people have their big horse/trailers going down tertiary roads as an example - regularly. Things will therefore stay the same LOLIn terms of breakdowns we sit for 2-3 hours between JHB and Midrand when there are accidents, breakdowns or even RAIN - fact is we learn to live with it. Really makes no difference because no matter the road we use now days in Gauteng we prepare ourselves for delays and people who can't drive as soon as a rain drop hits their car!
I hear what you are saying but most people will probably also just fold and use the toll roads anyway!

If nobody knows about the money, then there is no exchange of money. It doesn't matter 1 person or 2 or 3, 4...
I have a great solution. We all get horses and gallop down the highway. It will solve the problem of paying tolls as there is no provision made for animals as transportation, at the best part, SANRAL will have to clean up all the horse crap.
I don't use this road so makes no difference
Yes i know Lever Road - that road is being destroyed by the fact that it cannot handle the growth of 20,000 new dwellings in the area and infrastructure in general is crumbling because of it.
Keep in mind i am NOT saying secondary roads are not going to take the knock and show the wear and tear on them. But once you know where the pot holes are you know where to drive hahaha - the point is I leave for work at 5am and generally i miss the traffic. During the week i have no reason to travel the same roads. The fact I will be better off/the same by NOT using tolled roads is personally the option that suits me.
It won't be the same for everyone as people have different routes. Us South Africans typically wave the doom and gloom flag and at the end of the day it really worked out OK and NOT as bad as we were assuming. So my choice is NOT to buy e-tag and NOT to use the tolled roads. That's what will work for me... courses for horses
I think we need to understand we will either pay tolls or we won't. The options of how we get from A to B will be personal in many cases. Our choice is the one we will end up paying or not paying for. None of us here have the answer to the fact that "Kak en betaal is die wet van die Transvaal" and will always be.
How we PERSONALLY decide to avoid further costs matters not to anyone else. Whether there are 25mi;transactions per day or 100,000 transactions per day - someone will and someone won't be paying.
I am just VERY interested in following the legal path to NEVER paying tolls again! IF that is possible we should all show SANRAL the middle finger and do this! Mass action - how wonderful!!

Don't buy an e-tag, don't pay the invoice when ( if ) you receive it in the post.
There is just no way they can practically charge everyone who follows this procedure.

That is true, but it is practical to charge a few people. With that in mind, while you can't get everyone, you can get some and make an example of them. This will basically become a game of chance, whether or not you will get caught at a roadblock or receive a summons in the mail, etc. And as its been mentioned already, the average motorist will simply comply and become sheep.
Im being a pessimist today for some odd reason.

Guys just pay the toll fees? I don't understand the problem here. In every country in the world you pay tolls. Have you seen what you have to pay to drive into London for example?
I for one am prepared to pay toll fees for the use of a good road. Also, since most of you seem to be unwilling to use the roads, that's great... More space for me!

Judging from the handful of e-tags sold to date I sense the sheep have grown some balls.
It's just an account, the same as your Telkom or Edgars account - it's not like you are going to jail if you don't pay.
Oh, and you can't get a summons in the post

Most people would be MORE than prepared to pay the toll fees, IF there was merit to it..
The state of the roads that are being tolled is not great... we as a nation ALREADY pay a Fuel Levy which gets paid to SANRAL (by law) for the maintence of the road network, etc etc....
