Early e-tag deductions spark fury

Guys just pay the toll fees? I don't understand the problem here. In every country in the world you pay tolls. Have you seen what you have to pay to drive into London for example?

I for one am prepared to pay toll fees for the use of a good road. Also, since most of you seem to be unwilling to use the roads, that's great... More space for me!

You clearly have more money than common sense my friend, have you been living in a cave while this system has been shown to be a scam on more fronts than i care to count

A warning, however: although motorists aren’t obliged to buy e-tags, road users who choose not to have them must still register their vehicle licence number with Sanral or buy a day pass. The non-payment of tolls when using an e-road is a criminal offence, and Sanral warns that 24-hour police patrols will be stationed along the routes to apprehend violators.

Oh... okay so now you'll have cops that are visible, as usual only for your own greedy reasons.

Piece of crap c.nts ... you can give us cops to harass the tax payer but you wont consider having 24 hour cop visibility in places where hijackings, robberies etc. happen on a daily basis.

This past year I haven't heard of or seen a metro cop stopping or assisting with regards to crime.. all they've done is harass me for not wearing my seatbelt and have just driven past taxis who stop in the middle of nowhere to obstruct traffic.

I for one am getting so sick of this joke government and I know I'm not the only one.

f... you, piece of sh.t government.

Dude, do you even know how toll roads work?

A toll road should be an alternate highway which is maintained better than another similar route.

Also these roads have been around for ages, they make an extra lane and now we're charged exhorbitent fees just to use infrastructure that's been in place for such a long time?

Seriously, don't be ignorant and so quick to part with your money when all the government is doing is charging you so that government officials friends and family can pig out on undeserved money and benefits.

lol

Have you guys seen the state of these new roads? The surface of the n1 between Rivonia and Beyers Naude is already coming apart. Sections in midrand are being resurfaced already!
The quality is pathetic. The surfacing material seems to gather water in the rain.
The cost of building these roads was quadruple the international norm- corruption, backhanders and incompetence anyone?
The cost of the tolling system was exorbitant.

And now we have to pay inflated prices on top of the vat, excise duty, green tax and fuel taxes already levied on us... For 3rd rate roads!

F..k that.

Your Common Law Right to travel unhindered.

CASE #1: "The use of the highway for the purpose of travel and transportation is not a mere privilege, but a common fundamental right of which the public and individuals cannot rightfully be deprived." Chicago Motor Coach v. Chicago, 169 NE 221.

CASE #2: "The right of the citizen to travel upon the public highways and to transport his property thereon, either by carriage or by automobile, is not a mere privilege which a city may prohibit or permit at will, but a common law right which he has under the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Thompson v. Smith, 154 SE 579.

Read the article and get some understanding and then....get angry.

Is South Africa now a US state ???

Um in London a car is a luxury, you can easily get anywhere anytime using public transport for about 100 -150 pounds per month using an Oyster card, I know because I did it myself.

In SA as a car owner conservatively you spend:

about 3k pm buying a vaguely decent car (this is post tax money so the Govt already has the equivelent of 1k of your salary for this "perk")
About another grand insuring it (insurance in this country is a rip off thanks to all the crime and evil insurance companies (again post tax money so the govt has gets about 300 bucks equiv of this)
Then you pay say 1600 (4 tanks of petrol) of which about half is govt tax (FOR HIGHWAYS, ROADS AND MAINTENANCE, RAF etc)

So we are up to about the equivilant to London in Tax money to get around (BEFORE this toll) and now they want more without providing me with any alternative or real return for all the rest of my tax money that dissapears into the vacuum that is SARS?

This is a public highway, most people have no choice in using. I luckily live 5 minutes from work so this isn't such a big deal, however I know people for whom this is gonna be an extra grand a month they have to shell out just to get to work and back to earn money so they can be taxed.

As for you argument of a good road, the damn thing isn't a year old and is warping and falling apart all over the place...

This tolling system is BS, its gonna drive up the prices of everything just so a few id10ts can become mega rich...

The road traffic act is just that...an act.
An act is not "the law". It is given "the colour of law" when enacted in parlaiment.
It needs YOUR CONSENT and you are giving it by saying nothing.

I plan to write a detailed post about this soon. There are people in ZA that doesn't pay
any toll fees because they have followed a "legal procedure" whereby they have withdrawn their consent to stand under these Acts.

You common law right to travel is guaranteed in the Bill of Rights.

I look forward to your post ... and looking forward to not paying toll fees :)

Amazingly the toll fee is similar to the cost of petrol.

hahahahaha, I couldn't be bothered to read the whole thread. But all I can say is that it simply serves them right. Anyone that tries to do the "right" (Complacently moronic) thing deserves the shafting that is coming. Morons

Yeah, me too.

So in other words, it will cost R 240 in tolls to go to Durban? That's almost what it costs now. What's the difference?

The etolling isn't on that section of N3.
The point with this is it has a massive effect on people's daily lives. Driving to durban isn't daily commute stuff. This is.
Also the toll road to Durban made massive improvements on the trip. There's not much improvement on these roads.

Hahahaha... youre funny :D You forgot that you dont pay to drive in London.. you Pay to drive on the most congested roads in London... The aim is to STOP people driving through (which causes smog in the areas) Secondly, there are no charges from 6pm to 6am.

But none the less... your post really cracked me up.

Good for you if you have an extra R800 bucks a month to go to work. There's a lot of people that will really be financially hurt by this. The secondary effect on the economy will be felt by everyone.

I'm not planning on paying.

If and when they finally haul me into court I will be telling the judge....

1) I have been driving on these roads for more than 20 years.
2) I have already paid for their upkeep, maintenance, expansion, etc. through my fuel levies and normal taxes.
3) The quality of work done on these roads is disgusting. Some of the surfacing is shoddy. And some of it is still not finished.
4) That the system of gantries and measurements is unfair. I will be charged for a 10 km section even if I get off at the next exit.
5) That the exclusion of Taxis and Buses which do not form part of any government sponsored mass transport system is racist and unfair.
6) That the inclusion of administration fees on top of the tolling fees is also unfair.
7) That I simply cannot afford this increase on top of all my other cost of living increases and that if he wants to throw me in jail for not paying that is fine as I will soon be out of a job anyway as I will no longer be able to afford to go to work.

These ANC C***S are racist thieves. Sly 21 why do fusking taxis and busses not pay ya ancyl. Answer this one.

Because the taxi industry would riot and burn gauteng down if they had to pay. The rest of us have historically been too apathetic to actually protest.
So sanral gives in to the bullies while saying that actually they're protecting the poorest of the poor from the tolls.
