Maybe because we are realists... we know that it's pointless.
It's a nice exercise, but its pointless... I mean, if people cared, 1 hour would turn into 2 and then 3 and then 4... nope... they all turning on already.

Now they can all say "well, I turned my lights off" and when you ask - what did you learn?

Well, I saved electricity, but will they turn it off again? No, not till the next MAJOR EFFORT.

Well if everyone had the same attitude as you, of course it wouldn't work :rolleyes:. Although I do see your point (sort of). People must now become more energy conscious and turn off lights that they don't need as a way of life, rather than a one-off event.
 
I shall - this Earth Hour is now over and so are my opinions on the matter.

I'll keep doing my bit - and NOT for only 1 hour a year.

That's my main issue... everyone is willing to do it for 1 hour a year... FSCK that!

I unplug my Nokia charger
I turn off my lights when I don't need them
I turn off the water (geyser) when I don't need it hot
I turn my microwave off when I'm not using it
I turn everything else off when I'm not using it.

People need a 1 hour effort a year to get that right?

well like I said Pretoria didn't bother I was expecting a dark city taking the drive up to the Union building for the view, but heh the lights were still shining like no tomorrow.

ffs i see why you battled with maths. the point was not to save electricity for just this single hour, it was done to bring awareness, to point out the little bits that can be done. not switch it off for this year then wait for the next.

Well so much for that little bit of awareness, I will not do it again. 5 Houses been hold up by gun point 5 minutes after the lights went out. 2 Streets further down, 2 people been shot while having a braai. This will work in a country where there is law and order, but not in this country of us. i rather keep my security lghts on to work so that I know when some one try to get into my property.
 
went to the fuel station to fill up. the whole centurion looked like a christmas tree during 'earth hour'. so much for people caring. i actually turned everything off at the mains. feeling kinda stupid now for doing that.
 
gdiza, you still didn't get the point of it. This particular effort wasn't about conservation. Please read up on what the actual aim was before calling it pointless.
 
I was watching TV and totally forgot bout Earth Hour. Only realised after it had passed. But if it's any consolidation, Eskom switched our power off on our behalf for OVER 12 HOURS 2 weeks ago. We do Earth Hour properly in SA - we do 12 of them at once!

Why fight the fires? After you put them out there will just be more, and more after that, and more after that, and more next season....

gdiza afaik this is a symbolic act. Turning lights off is not supposed to "save the environment". See it more like it is a global barometer of support for efforts to control our greenhouse gas output. Our current way of life is not sustainable.
 
We had a constellation tour during Earth Hour. Of course the Municipality didn't want to cooperate and switch off the street lights, but it was very successful nonetheless. Around 30 people pitched and they thoroughly enjoyed it. There's nothing like looking at the stars in decent dark skies.
 
I was also out looking at the stars through a telescope. Nearly half of the neighbours had their lights off.

And that is the other benefit of Earth hour - darker skies! Quite nice if your neighbours actually participate and switch off their security lights that's normally the bane of any amateur astronomer.

The problem is exactly that. It's symbolic and nothing more. I'd bet the overwhelming majority of people who turned off their lights are far to comfortable in their current way of life to even consider making the drastic changes required to prevent a supposed global warming catastrophe.

I went to Hyde Park for a meeting last night at approx 19:00. In the entire shopping centre, only Exclusive Books had the lights off - the customers at Seattle Coffee Shop were drinking their coffee by candle light. The other restaurants could not care less.

After the meeting, we went for dinner at the Blu Bird centre in Atholl. They fared a little better - three of the restaurant were serving dinner by candle light.

It seemed that businesses in JHB did not care to make the symbolic statement.

I agree 100% with you. This earthour thing feels a lot like some yuppies idea at doing something that seems cool and trendy in the current green times. An excuse for publicity, conferences and lunches and parties and acting clever for some people :D

We need an all year everyday awareness and a change in mindsets of everyone.

I must however say that at least it has created some more awareness of the concept and is a start...

Yeah, epic fail at Nelson Mandela Square only a couple of restaurants turned their lights off and the Square itself kept its lights on, including a number of the offices upstairs. The whole thing was televised, yet it seems the organisers didn't organise a damn thing about getting the lights turned off. Huge fail.
