Eastern Province Kings rugby discussion thread

TBH, I'm more than slightly happy that the Cheetahs trounced the EP Kings.

It doesn't really matter how many black players other unions use as they were not the ones DEMANDING a S15 place based on all the black talent that MUST play SupeRugby.

There no black players representing EP Kings cause they already contracted out to other provinces.

1. Lwazi Mvovo
2. Bjorn Basson
3. JP Pieterson
4. S Ntubeni
5. Kolisi

...to name but a few.

MickeyD needs to post that list of players again to remind us of why EP rugby and Cheeky are pushing their agenda.

Bloemfontein here we come. Cheetahs are going down.

How much salt would you like now that you will be eating your words? :p

I read earlier today something along the line that the Weepee Kings need to beat the Free State team in the next match by something like 40 points? And they need 4 more tries than Free State? Any one know what EP have to do to prevent FS from staying in the S15?

My bad.

So from Mickey's list, players of colour:

Akona and Odwa Ndungane
Bjorn Basson
Zane Kirchner
Lubabalo Mtembu
Lwazi Mvovo
Sibusiso Sithole
Lionel Mapoe
Bandise Maku
Davon Raubenheimer
Siya Kolisi
Scarra Ntubeni

JC Janse van Rensburg comes from a farm in the Oudshoorn area. I assume the list then includes SWD. That would then be for the Southern Kings as opposed to the EP Kings. Many excellent players from Oakdale and Outeniqua in George is becoming a force to be reconned with. The reality however is that rugby is pro now and players will get signed early to play anywhere in SA ... and even abroad as happened to JP Du Plessis (who's now back in SA with Province).

Exactly, which is why the Kings have been canvassing for a spot in the Super 15. To remain financially viable and therefore competitive.

You can't do that. How can you assume those players would have stayed there? And there's a few guys on that list that play in the same positions, so even more likely that they'd have moved on for starting roles. Not to mention, as seen with the Lions and Cheetahs, even if EP was a perennial CC team they'd have players poached by the other more fashionable (WP & Sharks) and successful (Bulls) teams.

That was not the purpose of the original post.

Nobody said they would all stay in the EC.

It is just illustrating that there are a lot of world class players coming from the region.

If the EC had a Super Rugby franchise plenty of those players would have thought twice about leaving. That is the reason I support a Super Rugby franchise in the EC.

Do I support the way it was done and handled? Never!!

Nobody would want to deny the EC their own franchise. We all want rugby in the EC to get well and become a force ... but the way the current outcome was achieved is where the problem comes in. Why not start with the Kings in the CB premier league and when the S15 becomes the S18 include the Kings? Now we have the Lions out and the real potential that the Kings will be an embarrassment and hated. A CB premier league first strategy would have given the team time to build and be ready to.compete. But Cheeky wanted it all now. That may come back to bite the whole region. A lot of hatred could have been turned into goodwill by being more patient.

While I'm not totally disagreeing with you, it is pertinent to remember how this all started and then to apportion whatever blame appropriately.

The Southern Kings (the Southern Spears) were promised a berth in 2007 and it has dragged on since then. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Spears

Ergo... a lot of the blame lies at SARU's door.

Great post. Quite sad when we start to think about how many players are lost to their own unions.

Correct... played against Graeme a few times (cricket, not rugby!) and he was always a straight shooter. It also reinforces my point that SARU have stuffed up.

The problem is: Who is SARU? Isn't SARU a collection of the presidents and CEO's of the different unions? Did this collective stuff up, or should someone in SARU's permanent employ have done something? Who is the SARU that stuffed up exactly?

So, the EP Kings fell at the final hurdle. While Friday's match was a much better showing, the season will be remember for losing in the promotion series. Overall, the Vodacom Cup was mediocre, 5 wins and 3 loses, the last coming in the quarter final. The Currie Cup season unfortunately, will not be seen in the light it should.

14 wins and 2 draws, and wining the final. The team should be revered as invincibles! They did something few teams will ever accomplish. Unfortunately, the only thing that most people will remember will be the play-off against the FS Cheetahs. While I don't agree with that outlook, as Billy Beane says: "it doesn't matter how many games you win if you lose the last game of the season".

As to next year's Super Rugby, the Southern Kings have a base to work from, which is more than could be said for the Melbourne Rebels, Western Force, or even the ACT Brumbies. Do I expect them to win the SA conference, of course not. I see a tight race for 4th place in the conference. However, no matter how badly they finish, even losing every single game, that is no worse than the Bulls of 2002 or the Lions of 2010.
