I've been through about two largish quakes (one was 5.8 and nearby the epicenter, which was quite a ride) - no power loss where I was though.
South Africa is a very beautiful country but I realized that it was not meant to be for Europeans. Africa is for Africans.
We decided to leave for Europe and spent 2 months of paper work with SARS and SARB and selling our possessions. This was hard on us as we could not take much with us and had to destroy our kids school stuff, photos and family heirlooms.
We decided on Portugal as it is cheap and the weather is similar to SA.
It took another 2 months of paper work with Immigration Control to get residency here and it got very frustrating and this was the most difficult time of my life.
Was it worth it? Never looked back. We are so happy here as there is no crime at all and the people are so friendly and go out of their way to help us and practice their English.
To top it all, we applied for the IRS Non Habitual Residency and were accepted and now pay no tax at all on our income.
The 4 months of stress was well rewarded and it is the best move we have ever made.

I think that the sad reality is that the definition of an African, is not determined by what we would like it to be. Some pipedream, rainbow-nation nonsense about being born in Africa regardless of Race/Colour. It is in fact determined by what the disgruntled majority determine to be an African. And at this time in South Africa's history, we know who the majority is and exactly who they define as African.
Unfortunately white people are are not indigenous to Africa but are in Europe. Think what you may but the SA gov has been clear on this.
Been away for a long time but remember you. Where is that old hag that got me banned. I have not seen any posts from her.
The fun part, as I'm sure you may have noticed, is that when you present your SA passport at EU immigration, they treat you every bit as african as you could ever hope for.

Yeah, and no matter how meticulous you were with your preparations and visa applications, etc, border control still has the final say.

100%. To get my visa for the UK I had to include results from a English test. They don't even recognise SA as a English speaking country.

You see, you are being small minded, there are more countries in Africa than just South Africa (and the SA gov doesn't get to categorise the entire continent). Anyone from any country in Africa is African, that would include Tunisians, Moroccans, Egyptians etc.

Yeah border control can be scary. I would suck at poker, I tried so hard not to look guilty of whatever.
Haha yeah my last trip through immigration last month I entered Germany from Egypt. Chatted to border control in fluent german and with my biometrics residence permit it took all of 30 seconds and I was cleared. It was the first time they didn't make me feel like an asylum seeker.
Schipol was the absolute worst. They have queues for EU residents and people just walk through there smoothly. The non EU line felt like you were on one of those migrant ships from Syria. Crammed full of people with their 20 family members and smelly and terrible.
The border guards are probably moody because they probably drew the short straw and had to sit at that desk on the day.

When I was in the New York with my sister last year everyone started us out. Eventually I asked the one guy wtf are you staring at us, apparently he never saw a pair as pale as us before (my sister is blonde with blue eyes as well) and wanted to know where we were from! Well....Africa you know, when we swim across the ocean our skin bleaches.
