I came close to hitting a massive rock placed in the left lane once, and this was the N2 approach coming from the airport. Now if I had a tourist with me I guess they'd be getting the full Cape Town experience.

Comparing 9/11 to the daily riots, blockades, killings, fires and so on that happen along our main highway seems a bit bizarre. One of my colleagues started a whatsapp group last week or so to organise convoys and he's been totally swamped with people desperate to sign up, so it's obviously not just me being paranoid.

Luckily the distance you'll drive on the N2 is pretty short.

But jeez, convoys organised via Whatsapp sound pretty hectic!

Maybe you should considering moving to the southern, northern or west coast suburbs and avoid the N2.

I don't travel N2 on a daily basis, maybe 1-2 times a month. My personal plan is quite simple though - I'm getting out.

For instance, I'm currently on the lookout for a property to buy sometime next year.

But looking at the bigger picture, this might be a bad idea. If I'm going to be staying here for the next three years, renting might make more sense if it allows me to invest in other countries instead. Especially as the Rand is seemingly losing value by the day.

Like I said no reason to worry.

I take the R300 > N2 > M3 virtually every single day both there and back on a motorcycle.

Only thing I've needed protection from are the other people driving while not paying attention.

Seems all this drama is on the other side of the R300 with larneys from Somerset West.

Not really. You can open a UK non-res share trading account & SWIFT the money there. At least in theory.

Yeah I guess there would be a few loophole options, but then it could be a case of those not being worth the while.

I specifically mean fully invested internationally so you can pull it out on that side if you need to.

Normally proper share trader accounts are exactly the ones that require more money to offset trade costs.

I was just referring to $1000 a month for good old passive options, anything more active will require more cash.

Sure you could probably do a Forex account for $100 a month if you want to get nowhere and lose all your money.

I'm fortunate, I have an EU citizenship and could leave tomorrow if I wanted to. Europe isnt attractive to me though. Its organized, modern and safe, but the apartment lifestyle with everyone jammed together like sardines I don't find appealing. Also most English speaking countries have really dreadful weather. Might not mean much for a week or so, but try spending 6 months in winter with permanent grey skies and rain. Its downright depressing.

I really don't want to emigrate, however I feel like eventually one day I'll be forced to. In my eyes there is a small base of people in South Africa who make a meaningful contribution and try and move the country forward. The rest seem to be hellbent on destroying everything in sight.

In the meantime, most of my savings and investments are going into dollar and euro denominated instruments. One thing is for sure, the rand will keep on slipping.
