Hi guys

I hope this is the correct place to ask this.

My contract with MTN which (in total) has been running for four years (2 for my first phone and 2 for my latest) and is coming to an end this month. I've spoken to them and apparently on a supplied date (with the account apparently actually ending the day before) I must phone them and request pay as you go. No problem there, BUT, apparently my last billing will go off in March. Take into account I opted for a debit order on the 2nd of every new month, normally it would be the 27th or 28th, but the end of Feb (beginning March) would be my last.

Is this normal? I get that it is a "month" out, but it still seems a bit odd since the lady I spoke to didn't sound quite sure if the reason was good enough. I was hoping some other MTN users can share some wisdom, also I am worried that, what with the way companies are, will that last debit order really be the last? How many of you've been billed well beyond the ending of a contract?

I doubt after this that I'll consider any form of contract ever again, I just found that it ties you into a data and call plan that means you get stuck at past rates and such.

Went this way with MTN about 18 months ago. I did not have a problem with the changeover or payment.

My MTN contract expired on 13 December 2014 and on that day I went into a MTN store to request that it be immediately changed to prepaid.

It took an awfully long time, but we eventually got through. Please note that because MTN has been losing a lot of customers in the previous years, prepaid/cancellation requests go straight through to MTN Retentions. They will try their utmost best to get you to sign another 24 month contract, by offering discounts, etc.

But I just told them my MTN number is not my main number anymore, but some account confirmation sms'es are still sent to the MTN number and that's why I'd like to keep it as prepaid. Got confirmation 24 hours later and it was done.

Thanks for the heads up. I kinda expected it. Truth be told, if they are losing customers they should start seriously rethinking their corporate "mantra" and ethics... what is left of it anyway. I've been paying a premium price and my data / airtime stayed basically the same as it was when I started with them.

But I can't, the future (being what it is, sans a souped up DeLorean) is extremely uncertain and currently it seems I might have to be job hopping in the next few months. (Something completely out of my control.)

I am just way too scared of MTN's latest dirty tactics, where you get an invoice for R20000 and they expect you to first pay it, before you can complain. Happened to my best friend and he had to hire a lawyer to fight them. Needless to say, he is now with Telkom Mobile and MTN lost a customer who spent well over R1000 a month with them.

I honestly don't need this kind of crap in my life, so I just moved the number to prepaid.

Problem solved.

Mine is also coming to an end in about 3 months. But I'm at the stage right now where I can decide to upgrade. However the deals they are offering is crap. It's really just terrible. So also thinking about switching, except for the fact that I have axxess data on these sims. SO I was thinking of just switching to their cheapest contract that they have on the market. As long as I can recharge airtime, phone people and use data.

actually signed the papers today. when my billing run ends i'll be free. wife is getting another shiny new phone though.

the march invoice could happen depending on your billing cutoff, and how many calls you make in your last month.

Around an hour ago a lady from the Retention dept phoned me and informed me that my airtime (which I got on the 21st) can't be transferred and I must use the data / time before changing over to pay as you go. I almost flipped my lid since I found this absolutely ridiculous AND what I can't understand is they can convert it to pay as you go. Really, the service provider can't <ctr+x> the remaining airtime on my contract and simply <ctrl+v> it into my "transformed" acc. Anyway, my first reaction was, wait a minute, I am not running through the airtime in one day, so technically, if I only cancel in a week from now (and not the 27th / 28th as I was instructed by the MTN call centre), they can add another month past March that they can bill me. But she told me, "As long as you use the stuff and cancel before the 20th, your last invoice will be the 2nd of March (my contracted debit time)."

Have any of you experienced this?

Pretty sure all operators do this. It is stated on the legalities of the contract.
(Only read the Vodacom and CellC contracts, have never been with MTN.)

my switch is scheduled for the 5th of Feb. im supposed to use my airtime by then. all R60 of it. hundreds of sms's that I will lose.

its scheduled for the 5th since my billing run ends on the 11th. im already paying an extra month to these fsuckers don't want to incur any more charges.

I cancelled my contracts with MTN in August last year, no issues.

Pro tip: when the retentions person asks you why you can cancelling tell them you are emigrating, they won't even bother offering discounts, etc. to try and keep you.

Canceled two contracts like this already. both numbers have been ported to other networks.

in April my main number is due for upgrade, and I wont take it. 3 months later it will be on prepaid, sure I will lose the Afrihost data but meh, don't care.

when the retention department calls I will simply give them 57 ticket numbers and 30 hello peter reference numbers. I have them all in note pad. most are unresolved....

today is d day for my prepaid switch. didn't even get a call from retentions. oh happy day!

I will lose the Afrihost data but meh, don't care.

I bought Huawei MiFi boxes for the wife and I. Afrihost double data stopped, we just switched to Axxess for the moment. Also ditching the MiFi and getting a dual-SIM phone. MiFi is nice but I'm too forgetful sometimes. :)

Okay, so I've apparently gone over to pay as you go. Time to revive this thread.

Now, I've had my last debit go off beginning of this month (as expected). Oh wait, let me rephrase that: I've had my "last" debit go off...".

So.

Now I need to make sure that it is the last. How do I do that? I've tried the bank, they say I need to phone MTN, but I tried phoning MTN to find out about the contract I am no longer on and they told me they can't help me, since the contract ended.

The bank (FNB) told me that I must ask for a emailed notification that the debit order has been stopped as of the last time it went off.

Otherwise, I can only wait until the beginning of next month, and god knows I have this odd feeling that I'll be sitting with MTN for a while with this.

my latest bill was for the wife and for the period I was still on the network. I suspect next bill will just be for the wife. if not ill just sort it out. they might surprise you.
