I've been using these dvd-amp-speakers in a box for a long time, and have decided to move over to a component system.

Can anyone recommend 'n decent, entry level system? Should I go Marantz, Onkyo or Denon?

R10k won't get you very far if you plan on buying from a decent audio shop ....

Remember with sound, people can say what they want, what sounds good to me, might not sound good to you.
So firstly remember that, you have to listen to the sound before you buy. There are many brands out there, difficult to choose. One
of the things you can consider is that on your budget it might be better to start building the system piece by piece instead of one shot. That way you can save up and over time get a better quality set than settling for lower end stuff up front.

Look at how big your room is and how big sound you need or want. I have a Marantz receiver that has Audisey sound setup included. Once setup with some tweaks it works great. With auto adjust on sound no more loud tv ads for me. So I am happy with it, but you might not be.

Start with the receiver do you homework see what is out there and at what price. I know the NAD receivers are quite good and also comes with Audisey. Look at how you would want your sound setup 5.1 / 7.1 what will your needs be. Then look at how much watts per channel you would want, sounds silly but also don't be fooled by big numbers on some brands. Look at how many devices you intend to have setup on the receiver and make sure it has enough inputs.

Once you have settled on the receiver you like. Then start looking at speakers and what's left of your budget. That is why I would suggest building the system piece by piece and over time. Best would be look around at the different audio stores and speak to the guys. Remember just because you are in a audio specialist store, don't think that the sales people won't sell you bs just to make a sale either. Remember some speaker "packages" the speakers are good but sometimes the sub not so good so when going for speakers maybe get the sub seperately. I currently only have a 5.0 set speakers, but now I can shop until I find a decent sub that I am happy with and won't be stuck with something I don't like.

For your budget you could even go to DionWired as a start and look at the different options they provide, as they stock the normal stuff you can get at game, and they stock some higher end stuff like Onkyo/Marantz. Just to get an idea of those brands and what they can offer.

Why not look at the classifieds? There is often some pretty decent second hand things available that you can get for the R 10k. PM me if you would like some more info on where to look.

If nothing else you should be doing some homework at avforums.co.za too.

Start with a decent amplifier (personal preference is Onkyo) and a pair of Monitor Audio BX2's ... add more BX's as your budget allow over the next few years.

Here is one second hand list I found but as you can see if you go really high end, even 2nd hand can get costly

Monitor has some good ranges of speakers and is worth looking at

Here is a link to a place that has pricing on some of the speakers.

Can try CatsDigital to start looking at some receivers and what they are priced at.

Here is a Denon one that does not look too bad.

With receivers remember to future proof yourself and make sure you get one that allows 3d throughput if 3d is something you want to do with in the future.

I like that R6,000.00 deal actually ....

R10k is a good budget to get something decent. I would say Marantz NR1402 + Jamo S416.

Dion Wired recently had a promo where they sold the combo for R8k, so I would check with them first.

If it's not available, then I would say the Onkyo S5405. The standard speakers are decent enough, but you can always upgrade them at a later stage because the receiver should last for a while.

10 k is a decent budget .Start with a receiver with all the bells and whistles .Go Yamaha or Marantz but not Sony or other common brands.Then get your sub,side speakers and finally surround in that order.Check Dion Wired.They have a combo Onkyo sale for around 7 or 8 k.Goodluck man!!

That Onkyo is a decent system and I would far rather buy that that those Sony systems in the same price range and over. Otherwise as has been said before, start with a AVR and a front set of speakers and make your way up from there. Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, Yamaha and on and on will all give you good service and a huge improvement on sound from your current setup.

Here are some other ideas:

I remember a while back that HDMI was unable to pass through the audio portion of the signal... Is that still the case?

I currently have :

* 40" Bravia S-Series
* DSTV HD-PVR
* XBOX
* Media PC (with blu-ray)

So I basically need something with at least 3 HDMI inputs, and HDMI pass-through.

HDMI always has been able to - Sony (and perhaps some other brands) didn't do this on some receivers

Damn it all this temptation...

To the OP, drop your R10k on that, you wont be disappointed...

Marantz makes good receivers, if you look at the receiver alone, shop around and see what the market related price is for
the receiver alone, that is what makes the deal worth it, and getting a decent set of speakers with it is just a bonus.

These speaker don't quite pack the punch in terms of bass, so if you love listening to music, you will need to get a sub to
to give it that extra bit of bass. For movies though the sound is good enough, you will be able to go for a bit until you have
saved up enough for a decent sub.

Geez... that does look awesome (and cheap).

What are the "pre-outs" for? The 5006 only has for the front speakers, where the 6006 has for all channels.

Is it also easy to find 2 separate Jamo speakers and another sub to add to the included 5.1 system?
