Yup there were coal power stations in the WC, but the cost of moving the coal there was expensive so they closed the plants down.

Wondering the same thing. Loadshedding.eskom.co.za says 'we are currently not loadshedding' but some friends (and I think my folks too) have no power, yet I'm still online.
