Eskom's plan to end load reduction

The South African government and Eskom won't declare the end of load-shedding until it has eradicated load reduction in the country, and the power utility has announced an intensified effort to end load reduction.

In a statement published on Friday, 24 October 2025, Eskom said it has stepped up its plans to end load reduction and increase Free Basic Electricity Registration.

That’s never going to happen lol.
I don't think it's actually about ending it, but more about Eskom cleaning up on its side and ensuring that those who are load reduced do not have a leg to stand on in blaming Eskom.

The end game is to have some compromise for those who are paying and compliant but caught in the cross fire of the non compliant.

Are they going to eradicate squatter camps?

All these prepaid meters are just a tender for some connected CADRE.
Does not mean those people are going to pay for electricity just because they have a meter.

Even during his Pretoria Mayor days it was meters this meters that.

I think there's a bigger chance the US government will start functioning on Monday.

What's load shedding?
Haven't had power outages at home for last 4 years.
I installed solar-pv+battery
Best investment ever.
During that period we've had a few long outages.
The longest being 32h30m in 2022-12-05 - problem with substation
I was not affected.

What if the squatter camp sees your lights on from a distance? Wont they get jealous?

Plans are great and all

Except for the upcoming elections

I wonder which area they are going to tackle first or is this plan going to be more like a deer in headlights?

Doesn't really matter what it's about. Eskom seems determined to keep jacking the prices up with no heed to how much cheaper solar is looking by comparison.

If they keep on that trajectory the handful of unaffordable units these folks will be able to scrape together enough money to afford will mean nothing.
